Take 5 Freek van der Vlist.
Returns after two seasons in the FIM MX2 World Championship Freek van der Vlist back in the EMX2018 in 250. Last season the rider from Apeldoorn was plagued by injuries. We look back on the season with CreyMert Racing and look at the transition to Car Glass Honda Racing.
MXMag: 1. How do you look back on 2017.
FvdV: “The Grand Prix season started well in Indonesia. I managed to finish tenth in my first GP overseas, not a bad start I think. Although these were of course special circumstances! After that it was a bit difficult, but it got better and better. When I thought I had solved the problems, things went wrong in Lichtenvoorde. 'Only' one GP was lost, but in Lommel things went wrong again. Bad luck, I fall due to another rider's mistake and I fall right back on my shoulder. My season was over and that is a disappointment, I was not able to show what I am capable of in 2017.”
MXMag: From the World Championship you are going 'back' to the EMX. Why this switch?
FvdV: “Later and honestly to do another GP season is very expensive! I received a nice offer from Honda and those conversations were very positive. I thought why not, why couldn't I go for a very good result in the EMX250. Of course the GP is the highest, but I can't pass up this offer from Honda and Carglass. I'm really looking forward to it!”
MXMag: How do you like your new team?
FvdV: The first meeting is very positive. The bikes were delayed a bit, but we were still able to ride with the CR450F. The guidance is good, I receive a lot of support and guidance both physically and mentally. I feel good about it and I am very satisfied!”
MXMag: What does your schedule look like in 2018?
FvdV: “The European 250 Championship is of course the most important combined with the KNMV Dutch Masters of Motocross. I also hope to be able to appear at the start of a few Grand Prix, such as Valkenswaard and Teutschental. For the first DMofMX I will probably ride in Lacappele Marival, Gemert and Boekel.”
MXMag: What is your goal for 2018, when will this season be a success?
FvdV: “I especially want to get the most out of myself and score well in the EMX250 and the DMofMX. In 2017 I finished fifth, perhaps a third place would have been possible, but I got injured during the final. I hope for a top three finish in 2018.”
