Tim Gajser also misses the opening GP!
Both Tim Gajser and Brian Bogers of Team HRC Honda will miss the opening race of the 2018 MXGP season. Gajser suffered a jaw injury in the final round of the 'Internazionali d'Italia' in Mantova last Sunday. Teammate Brian Bogers has still not fully recovered. As a result, Calvin Vlaanderen will be the only official Honda factory rider in Neuquén.
After a successful operation in Mantova on Sunday evening, Gajser left hospital the next day and was transported to Slovenia via ambulance. Another surgical procedure followed – performed by dental surgeon specialist Dr. Grošeta from Maribor Hospital – to further stabilize the broken jaw.
With an estimated recovery time of three weeks and a mandatory rest period for the two-time world champion, Gajser will focus on a possible return to the MXGP of Europe in Valkenswaard.
Tim Gajser: “All things considered, I can say that I was very lucky. I slid my right leg away before I made a jump that accidentally opened the throttle. That's why I jumped too far. I actually landed at the base of the next jump and hit my handlebars hard. However, I want to look on the bright side because it could have been a lot worse, and I will be back sooner than anticipated. I would like to thank the doctors and medical staff who cared for me, the team who stood by my side, the fans and everyone who was deeply concerned about my well-being. I'll soon have a smile on my face again – and hopefully it will look nice too!”
Marcus Pereira de Freitas, HRC General Manager – MXGP
“First of all, we're glad Tim didn't seriously injure his body as it was quite a scary crash! The aim now is to ensure he is fully fit again before he gets back on the bike, but it looks like it won't take too long this time. We can't wait to have him back and we wish him a speedy recovery. Gajser is a true warrior, so he will be stronger than ever.”
