Column: Wannes 'Wanny' Van De Voorde
Helabakes, the Wanny is back! First of all, best wishes to everyone for 2018. Because the previous column was a while ago, I have quite a lot of news to report. We'll just fly in!
In October, after my participation in the Coupe de l'Avenir, the plates were removed from both my collarbones and a rest period of 4 weeks was introduced. A necessary “evil” because as a pilot you would rather not sit on that engine as much as possible. It's like not being allowed to see or touch your loved one for a month 😉
At the beginning of November we were finally able to resume motorcycle training. Due to the bad and cold weather it was sometimes difficult to find a suitable and/or open circuit in Belgium and the surrounding area. In the meantime, daily life continued with exams at school, the organization of our meal day, physical training and so on. And then came the moment I had been looking forward to for a long time: the Christmas holidays!
As you may have heard, I get the opportunity to drive in a new team this year. It is a team founded by Jimmy Verburgh, who everyone knows from his freestyle team Fmx4ever. This is truly a dream come true for me! In preparation, we went on a 14-day internship to Spain with Jimmy.
Together with Travis and Troy Verburgh, Killigan Delroeux, Kjell Verbruggen and Mario Lucas Sanz, among others, we trained on various circuits. We spent the last days at the famous Redsand MX Park. Quite a different atmosphere and climate in which to stay and train than here in Belgium. It's just wonderful to spend the holidays there with a great group. I would love to leave again in a heartbeat!
As fun and cool as it is that I get to experience all of this, it is still quite an adjustment for me and it also gives me extra stress. New people, different circumstances, different ways of working and a different approach. I feel like I have to prove myself all over again to all these new people. And that's something I'm going to have to work on and learn to deal with differently. Seeking and finding my own way in it. But that will be fine 😊
The mental aspect in motocross is often underestimated and it is a bit taboo to talk about it, but I am who I am and it is what it is. We are just moving towards the future in a positive way and enjoying my sport remains the most important thing.
We normally go back to Spain in February so definitely something to look forward to. And in the meantime, back to school and making the best of it in our Belgian weather. Just do it! Thanks for reading and see you next time. You can always leave feedback below or in person of course.
