HOT: Christophe Pourcel says goodbye!
“Today is the day, I am pleased to announce my retirement from racing.” With those words, Christope Pourcel just said goodbye as an active, professional motocross rider. The former MX2 world champion and two-time Lites SX champion rode for Rockstar Energy Husqvarna in Canada last season.
The 29-year-old Pourcel won a total of 6 GPs, 11 AMA SX Lites races and 6 AMA Nationals. There could easily have been many more. The erratic Frenchman was often criticized for not living enough for his sport and for being very headstrong off the track. Yet it can safely be called a small miracle that CP377 still reached the top in the US after an unfortunate crash during the Irish GP in 2007 and was paralyzed from the diaphragm down for a while. In terms of style and riding skills, Pourcel was one of the greatest in the history of motocross and supercross.
The year before his serious crash, he became the eighth Frenchman ever to win the MX2 world title. At the expense of Tony Cairoli. He did this with the Belgian-French GPKR Kawasaki team of Patrick Geladé. In the US, Pourcel achieved great heights with Mitch Payton's Monster Enery Pro Circuit Kawasaki team. On top of his Supercross successes, he quickly won the outdoor title in 2009. Christophe was at the top of the championship until the penultimate race when he suffered mechanical failure. Despite a higher number of victories, Ryan Dungey would take the title that year.
In his own words CP377 said the following:
