WMX : Fontanesi takes the title
What a thriller and what a denouement... But Kaira Fontanesi is the new WMX World Champion 2017. The Italian Fontanesi takes her fifth world title in the WMX class in Villars Sous Ecot. After two hours of deliberation by the competition jury yesterday in connection with protests that were lodged, we received the correct result for the first series yesterday, and we were looking forward to the second series on Sunday. The circuit itself was slippery and muddy due to the heavy rainfall and was even shortened a bit for the ladies. So we had a final with four candidates for the title and circuit as direct referee.
Nancy Van De Ven left the second series with a two-point lead over Fontanesi and five points over Lancelot, a disappointed Duncan following yesterday's jury deliberation with nine points. Yet it was New Zealand's Duncan who took charge and led the second series ahead of home rider Lancelot and Van De Ven, Papenmeier and Fontanesi. Yet it was the Italian Fontanesi who was the first victim in this mud party. This caused her to drop to seventh place. In other words, Nancy Van De Ven drove in a controlled manner as best she could on this very slippery circuit in third place and Fontanesi was in trouble. Van De Ven was well on track for the title in third place until she fell just short of reaching the top on a slippery slope three laps from the end and fell. This immediately ended the title dream for the Dutch, making Fontanesi and Lancelot eligible for the title again.
At the front it was just old-fashioned Courtney Duncan and she won this second series with a great display of power. So we had to look forward to the duo Lancelot and Fontanesi. The French Kawasaki rider crossed the finish line as number two and so we had to look forward to Fontanesi. And yes, the Italian crossed the finish line as number three and took the world title with just one point. Livia Lancelot, who rode her farewell race, finished second and Courtney Duncan, who was certainly head and shoulders above the rest this weekend, had to be satisfied with a third place in the World Cup final standings and ended up two points shy of the title... Amandine Verstappen our only one The Belgian representative finished sixth in the final standings of the WMX World Championship.
