VMX Assen: Five minutes with Serge Guidetty
This weekend the veterans will also be in action on the famous TT circuit of Assen. After all, the FIM World Cup for veterans is also decided in the Drenthe sandbox. One of the striking names on the list of participants is Serge Guidetty. Today, Guidetty, is Shot Racegear's driver manager. Late '90s, early nillies the spectacular Frenchman was a supercross specialist and one of the faster private men in the GPs!
Why did you come from the warm south to the drizzly Veterans World Cup in Assen?
Serge Guidetty: “They obliged me! (grins). My participation is the result of a lost bet with Ghislain Huot, the boss of Shot Racing. He won, so in return I had to participate in Assen.”
You had never thought about participating in the VMX class before?
Guidetty: “No, not really, although I still drive often. I have my own motocross school in France where I organize internships and provide individual coaching. After my professional career I never stopped riding. Every now and then I also participate in a local competition. First and foremost, I'm here at the start to have fun!”
Training other riders can also teach the instructor something. It is often a way to pick up something new yourself.
Guidetty:"Certainly. I have also noticed that I learn something from my contacts with coaches and trainers from other disciplines. You can always learn something about how they do physical training in other sports. Some aspects also exceed the specific and technical aspects of completely separate disciplines. Just think about balance, corestability exercises, the importance of flexibility. That is all very valuable if you can translate it to crossers! Even after all this time, I am still learning new things, also regarding the mental side of motorsport.”
You used to be a GP rider, you also performed at a high level. Do you feel the expectations now for this World Cup?
Guidetty:“No, I take it as it comes. I don't feel the pressure to deliver a result. I am now 41, my professional career is over. I have already participated in so many high-level competitions. Assen is not the most important match of my life. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to be here and I've worked hard to get ready! Just driving around in circles is not in my nature. If I commit myself to something, I go for it completely!”
So you've been eating quite a bit of sand lately!
Guidetty:“(laughs) Unfortunately, yes! I'm really not a sand specialist and a lot has changed since my time in the GPs. Now it is so incredibly important for every high-level rider to be able to perform in the sand. And it is also essential for physical preparation. When I rode GPs, the sand races were something that riders who were not from the Netherlands or Belgium looked forward to with horror.”
I'm sure it will be fun to compete against ex-World Cup competitors again?
Guidetty: "I think so. But to be honest, I barely looked at the entry list for the VMX class! It was funny that I met Alex Puzar last week during training in Ottobiano. We then talked a bit about Assen and of course it's cool to ride with guys like Alex (Puzar), Mats Nilsson and the others. Wow, now that I think about it, it seems like an eternity since I rode my last GP. Montevarchi in 2003 that was!”
What was the best moment of your racing career?
Guidetty: “All competitions in which I could distinguish myself. My victories in the French National 125cc Championship, in the French 250cc Supercross Championship, series victories or day victories in the French Elite Championship. I am also quite proud that I was one of the European pioneers in freestyle. In 1995 in Paris-Bercy he won the freestyle competition against Jeremy McGrath and Mike Metzger! In addition, I am also satisfied with what I have achieved in the Motocross World Championship. In Castiglione de Lago I came 2002th in the 4cc GP in 125, I was sixth in Asti in 1998 in the quarter liters. I've had good days and bad days. Maybe there could have been more, but overall I'm happy with how things went.”
Did you bring your clogs for this weekend?
Guidetty:"Totally forgotten!"
Good luck and enjoy!
Guidetty:“Thanks, we will!”
