Pauls Jonass World Champion MX2
Pauls Jonass has taken the world title in the MX2 class in Villars sous Ecot, France. The Latvian had to wait until the very last Grand Prix to be crowned “The King of MX2”. The Red Bull KTM rider was able to secure the title already in the first series. However, this did not go so smoothly, after a perfect start Jonass literally dived with his nose in the mud when entering the second corner. Jonass kept the peace and was the last to leave the track, ultimately the Latvian rider took a nice fifth place, which was enough for the world title. Pauls Jonass is the very first Latvian rider to win a world title in motocross history.
In 2011, this 20-year-old Latvian rider already won a title in the Junior 85cc World Championship. A year later, Jonass finished third in the Junior 125cc World Championship and also finished fifth in the EMX125 European Championship. In 2013, he won his first European title with a win in the EMX125 class.
From 2014 he switched to the MX2 class where, partly due to some injuries, he only finished 23rd in his “Rookie Year”. In 2015 he ended up under the wings of the Red Bull KTM team, which was then led by Stefan Everts, and he became Vice-World Champion behind Tim Gajser. 2016 turned out to be an unlucky year after he had a serious crash during the Czech GP and had to sit out the last six races. However, he was able to turn the tide again in 2017 and took his very first world title in the MX2 class.
