MCLB: New champion Gianni Vercammen
New National MX1 champion Gianni Vercammen celebrated his championship party in Wingene this weekend, he was already certain of his title but there was still a big party in Wingene and rightly so. Gianni has had a strong season with numerous victories. One day after the celebration we took him in for the microphone.
Gianni finished the last match of the season with a double series victory. Two wonderful starts ensured that the National MX1 champion was able to complete his series without much opposition.
Hello Gianni, first of all congratulations on your title, have you recovered from yesterday yet?
"Thank you! Yes, for the time being I am still enjoying it.”
How did you experience this year?
“This year has gone extremely well in every respect. The big difference with last year is that I started earlier with the thought “we'll see”. In previous years I was too keen on a podium place. That brought stress and nerves and that made it very difficult. Now that I have completed my renovations, this is a big burden off my shoulders, which means I am better rested at the start.”
How did you experience the switch from the 250 to the 450?
“The transition actually went quite smoothly for me. I find the power of the 450 perfectly manageable, and good suspension naturally makes it easier to walk. The biggest advantage for me is getting started. In the past with the 250 I always missed my start, but not anymore. A major disadvantage with the 450 is that on some courses the bike is not agile enough. Since I only weigh 60 kilos, that requires a lot of strength and energy.”
What are the goals for next year at the 'Inters'?
“I'm going to start again with the same motorcycle, the Honda 450. My goal/dream has actually already been achieved at this point and that is to get to the inters. My goal now is to gain as much experience and speed as possible, we will see about the rest.”
Would you like to thank someone else?
“I would like to thank my mom for all the support throughout the year. I would also like to thank Filip, Jens and Marcel Van Humbeeck for helping me throughout the year. My girlfriend too, of course, because she helps me a lot in cross-country and gives me a lot of motivation. Also to my family, parents-in-law and friends for their incredible support and for believing in me so much. I would also like to thank my sponsors: T-Paint, Safetycor, Tectum, Wemota, Crabbe, TGE and of course Dirk Tanghe for the good service throughout the year.”
