Ken De Dycker says goodbye to the MXGP World Championship
24MX Honda rider Ken De Dycker started strongly in the first round of the Dutch GP but disappeared from the race with technical problems. The disappointed Lubbeken resident would not start in the second race. Keeno also announced his retirement from the World Cup.
The retirement of the 33-year-old veteran did not come as a surprise as it had already become clear that 2017 would be his last MXGP season. It was unexpected that De Dycker did not finish the season.
Despite this sad farewell, one of the most important Belgian riders of his generation is leaving the World Cup stage. The 33-year-old Flemish Brabander won the MX of Nations with the Belgian team, achieved several MXoN podiums, won five GP victories, finished third twice in the final standings of the MX1 World Championship and won the MX1 title in Germany, Great Britain Britain and Belgium. De Dycker stood out because of his length and special driving style. He was very popular with the public both at home and abroad.
Ken Dycker: “It's over, I can't say anything more. After my retirement in the first moto I was so disappointed that I decided to call it a day. Mentally it has been a very tough season, partly due to the change of teams after JTech closed down. After 15 seasons at the highest level, the circle is now complete. I also enjoyed the driving itself less and less. The GP chapter is now definitively closed. I am still considering my sporting future. There are some offers outside the World Cup, but I want to let everything sink in first. I don't have any more competitions planned for the time being. I would like to sincerely thank all the people who have supported me throughout all these years.”
