KEMEA Yamaha Race Report – Jacksonville (USA)
After a last minute change to the calendar, the MXGP caravan finally descended on the WW MX park in Jacksonville, Florida for this year's American GP. For several years now, Florida has been the place to be in the MX field in the States. Many riders are based in Florida to prepare for Supercross and outdoor competitions. Florida's warm and humid climate makes it the ideal place to push yourself physically, but for those not used to these conditions, it won't be easy to adapt for a weekend.
In the run-up to the American GP, Benoit Paturel had a serious fall during training on the track in Villars sous écot. He was immediately taken to hospital for observation and ultimately received a severe verdict. The fall damaged his liver and Benoit unexpectedly had to end his season immediately.
After a heavy rain storm on Friday evening, the circuit was very wet for the qualifications. Brent finished the race in 12th place and Alvin was classified 27th. The Swede was in a battle for a top 10 place when he suffered technical problems at the end of the race.
Despite a good jump out of the starting gates, Brent lost a few places in the first lap and rode around 15th place in the early stages of the first heat on Sunday. He made up a few places and crossed the line in 11th. Alvin came out of the top 25 on the first pass, but pulled off a strong recovery to arrive in 14th.
In the second series Brent was able to capitalize on his good start and joined the battle for the top 5. He rode a strong race and crossed the line in sixth place, giving him his best finish since Valkenswaard. Brent finished ninth in the final standings and is in tenth place in the World Championship standings.
Alvin arrived in 13th place in the final moto after another strong race. He finished 11th in the day's results and is now 14th in the World Cup standings.
Brent Vandoninck: “I am very happy with this result. It's been a long time since I had such a positive feeling after the matches. I made a lot of mistakes on Saturday but rode much better on Sunday. I had a good start twice. In the first heat I went too wide in the first corner and lost a few places, but I was happy with eleventh place even though it could have been better. In the second series I was able to stay on the inside more in the first corner and was immediately in the top 5. I was pleased to be at the front again and that I could keep going until the end despite the heat. I tried to attack Jonass on the last lap for fifth place, but Harrison slipped past me. However, in the last corner they collided and with a bit of luck I was able to finish sixth. Overall a positive weekend and I look forward to continuing that trend for the next games.”
Alvin Ostlund: “ I really enjoyed myself this weekend in Florida. I thought the course was really good and I had fun on the circuit. Unfortunately, I had a bad starting position on Saturday due to technical problems. I had a good start in the first moto but crashed in the second lap. I came from far back to 14th place and was happy with that. In the second heat I had a poorer start and was in the middle of the pack to finish 13th. Maybe not the best results, but I felt good on the bike and had a good rhythm in the races.”
