Herlings and Covington on pole in USGP
During the first day of the USGP in In Jacksonville, the European riders dominated the debates. Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings fought a nice duel in the beginning, but in the end Cairoli let his Dutch stablemate go. Jeremy Van Horebeek was in the top 5 from the start. He eventually finished fourth after Romain Febvre.
Earlier in the day, Cooper Webb had dropped out with a broken wrist. With Justin Barcia also leaving the match before the middle of the series after a collision with Paulin, only Eli Tomac was left to play a significant role. However, Tomac had a bad start and had to settle for 12th place. The hot and humid conditions didn't seem to bother Jeffrey Herlings. Although the surface is not deep sand, more comparable to Kegums, 'The Bullitt' found a track that suits it. He was also the fastest in the timed training earlier in the day.
Thanks to a sixth place, Glenn Coldenhoff also starts the GP in a good starting position. Max Anstie was also doing well, but he got a stone on his hand and gave up. Fortunately, there was no breakage, so the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna pilot will try to drive soon. Clément Desalle came in 9th after a duel with Paulin. Strijbos, although in good spirits in the timed training, finished 13th after a weak start.
Covington dominates in front of his own crowd
The American hope came naturally to Thomas Covington in MX2. In training, Adam Cianciarulo fell on his knee, so he will not start tomorrow. Justin Hill, who finished 22nd, was the only Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider. For Covington it was already his fourth qualifying victory of the season. The sympathetic American beat the surprising Justin Cooper (Star Racing Yamaha). World Championship leader Pauls Jonass, who had been fifth for a long time, still finished third in the final phase ahead of Thomas Kjer Olsen and Jorge Prado.
As expected, the Americans performed better in the MX2. After the top 5, Mitchell Harrison and Chase Sexton occupy places six and seven. Brian Bogers (9th) and Davy Pootjes (10th) also made it into the top 10. For Jeremy Seewer, the qualifying race was a repeat of many previous Saturdays. After a bad start he got into trouble and had to settle for 11th place, ahead of Brent Van Doninck. Julien Lieber rode a strong catch-up race from 24 to 13.
