Herlings and Covington on pole in Assen
Jeffrey Herlings (MXGP) and Thomas Covington have become the winners of the Qualifying Races for the Grand Prix of the Netherlands. Home rider Jeffrey Herlings was clearly the fastest in this qualifying series of the MXGP class. The Red Bull KTM rider only had to pass Paulin and front starter Gajser to ride to victory undisturbed. From the Belgian side we got a nice fourth and fifth place for Jeremy Van Horebeek and Kevin Strijbos. The leader in the standings Antonio Cairoli rode a quiet Qualifying and just finished in the top ten. Clement Desalle sat in eighth place for a long time, but had problems in the closing rounds and would ultimately only be selected 24th. Jeremy Delince (16), Bryan Boulard (26), Damon Graulus (31) and Ken De Dijcker (32) were our other Belgians at the start in Assen.
In the MX2 class, the first three places were filled by the riders from Jacky Martens' Rockstar Energy Husqvarna team. American Thomas Covington took the win ahead of his teammates Thomas Kjer Olsen and Conrad Mewse. Our compatriot Julien Lieber led for a number of laps until his exhaust came loose and was therefore moved from fourth to ninth place by the competition jury. But Kemea Yamaha rider Brent Van Doninck (12th) also received a penalty and was classified 17th. Jago Geerts, who finished third in the timed training, crossed the finish line in 22nd place. Qualifying did not go so well for Pauls Jonass and the leader in the standings only crossed the finish line in 19th place. Finally, we got Nathan Renkens in 25th place.
