Graulus ends the World Cup season well
Last weekend the 19th and final round of the Motocross World Championship took place in Villars-sous-Ecot, France. In very difficult and muddy conditions, Damon Graulus managed to score seven points. Since the Vossem native was hurt for a long time, the season is now completely over for him. Graulus will have surgery on his thumb as soon as possible.
The MXGP world championship in the 'pays de Montbéliard' was not allowed to have a dry final. The sun shone on Saturday afternoon and the circuit was dry, but persistent rain on Saturday also made the qualifying round an ordeal. Although Graulus clocked the 20th fastest time in timed training, he had a mediocre start in the qualifying race. At the first pass, Damon was 17th with a group in front of him that included Gajser and Lupino. In an overtake with Desprey, the 24MX Honda rider crashed and finished 20th.
The match on Sunday was not a repeat of the swampy Russia. Even though the mud was much less sticky, the slippery track did not make the ride any less challenging. As a result, Graulus suffered a lot from his thumb injury and the treacherous descents littered with potholes also required utmost concentration. After a steady first race he finished 20th.
The multiple national MX2 champion managed a great start in the final moto. Graulus was just outside the top 10 at the start. Although he lost a few positions, he still finished nicely in 15th. In the final standings, Damon recorded 22nd place, on equal points with Ken De Dycker, despite missing the five overseas matches.
Damon Graulus: “In itself it was a positive weekend. When I saw the rain, I already had nightmares about the GP in Orlyonok (ed. MXGP of Russia) where I had spent more time on the ground than riding. Fortunately, the circuit was now a bit more passable. In the first heat I had mainly decided not to fall. Of course also with my injured thumb in mind. My speed was okay, but it was clear that my pace was just a little too slow. In the second moto I had a great start and I tried to get as much out of it as possible. That worked out quite well with that 15th place. This Thursday I have an appointment with the specialist to look at my thumb. Especially since Assen, my thumb has been bothering me a lot. So driving any further is really not an option. Normally, I will not be allowed to drive for six weeks after the operation.”
24MX Honda will compete in the MX of Nations in Matterley Basin, Great Britain, on September 30 and October 1 with Swedish guest rider Fredrik Noren. Norwegians also rode in Maggiora last year for 24MX Honda.
