Yentel Martens wins spectacular first MX Festival Wachtebeke!
The very first MX Festival at the Provincial Domain Puyenbroeck in Wachtebeke could count on healthy interest from riders and the public. The Inters Open races also provided plenty of spectacle and had two winners with allure: Yentel Martens (MX1) and Tomas Kohut (MX2)! However, the MCLB riders did not simply let things get to them, as an excellent Torpjurn Van Hoe was third on the podium after Martens and Jérémy Delincé.
The weather gods were also favorable to the collaboration between AMC Evergem and MC Samen Sterk with dry and mild weather conditions. In the afternoon, the circuit, which was dusty in some places, even took on a festive touch under the bright sun! Difficult to say why some riders ignored this first edition, was it the fear of confrontation? In any case, those present were proven wrong.
Much to the delight of the MCLB supporters Jurgen Wybo with the holeshot in the first heat. Wybo got it right away Yentel martens and Jérémy Delincé behind him. Deleersnijder and Damiaens also had a good start. Woby felt Martens' hot breath on his neck and after two laps the Leon Sagaert Husqvarna rider was ready for the effort. Co-favorite Delincé saw the situation and moved to second so that Yentel could not run out. Delincé regularly came up to Martens' rear wheel, but he defended his position well. The final offensive of the KMP-Honda rider was also repulsed. Martens narrowly took victory in an exciting first race. Kevin Fors, Delincé's teammate, had a weak start but the former Belgian MX2 champion came back strong and finished third. Also Torpjurn Van Hoe came back fine. Torpie preceded Wybo because he had crashed out of sight of our reporter (thanks for the update Jurgen!) and thus became the first MCLB rider as 4de. Wybo ultimately crossed the line in 6th place. With two laps to go Dietger Damiaens Fifth place still belonged to Jurgen Wybo, but the DAM Racing-KTM rider was never comfortable with his rhythm. Slovakian guest rider Tomas Kohut (KTM Diga Junior Racing) won the MX2 class ahead of Tim Vandriessche.
The second race started with a holeshot by the surprising Kevin Fors, but his reign would not last long. Yentel Martens wasted no time and rode smoothly to the front. Nice to see how the Husqvarna rider flew neatly upright across the circuit Jérémy Delincé had to watch it with sorrow. He had missed his start and was initially in eighth position. The surprising Torpjurn Van Hoe was at the front. Torpie also rode around in style and remained unthreatened in second for a long time! Wybo had a series of bad luck and quickly disappeared from the race.
This time a more attacking Damiaens. who had made the necessary adjustments to his suspension during the break. Dietger rose from four to three but had to give up on the oncoming Delincé. Unexpectedly, it became even more exciting for the final victory. Lap after lap, Delincé crept towards Martens. The last seconds were also almost edited out, giving the audience a thriller as a finale. Jéremy really did everything he could, set the fastest lap of the battle and tried to put pressure on Yentel, but he kept his cool. Both cocks crossed the finish line with a difference of one second! Because Dietger Damiaens had fallen three laps before the end, the battle for places of honor was suddenly open again. Robin Bakens seized his opportunity and finally defeated Van Hoe. In the final standings, Bakens just missed the podium with a nice fourth place. Jaimy Deleersnijder who had started well, finished fifth and became sixth overall. EMX250 rider Kohut had clearly learned from the first series, he now came in nicely as 6th overall and first MX2 rider!
Maarten Govaert had an unfortunate first series so often this season only to have a spectacular outcome in the second. Unfortunately, Wachtebeke turned out to be a disappointment for the sympathetic Wetter native. In his own words:“It would have been better to stay in bed and eat a pancake on the dike this afternoon. First series a disaster and second series an equally big disaster.” In the duel for ninth place, Maarten achieved a very spectacular photo finish sprint. Nice for the spectators, but Kevin Fors came out on top!
