VLM: Inters MX1 champion Wesley Verheyen says goodbye
If the reigning VLM Inters champion retires, it will be big news! The sympathetic Wesley Verheyen (31) had an unfortunate fall during the MCLB competition in Tielt in June. The WMX-Yamaha pilot suffered a fracture to the ankle and heel of the right foot. Now Wesley has decided to end his career because of this injury.
Immediately after his fall it became apparent that it was a very complicated fracture. Just about anything that could break the ankle was effectively broken. “After a second consultation with a specialist, I decided to stop. The specialist made it clear to me that it will be a long rehabilitation and that there is also a chance of permanent pain. It is also not yet clear what I will be able to do with the ankle.”
Verheyen, who became Belgian National 2003cc champion in 125, became a permanent fixture at the VLM Inters. He also became vice-champion at the Inters MX2 (2012) and came third at the Inters MX1 in 2013. The crowning achievement came last year when he took the title in the MX1. “I have indeed had many ups with titles in different associations, series victories and so on. I still feel the downs every day when I get up” 🙂
“I would like to thank everyone who has supported me with my hobby over the past 26 years. First and foremost my parents, thanks to whom I was able to race all these years and who have done so much for it. Furthermore, I would like to thank the Funmx team for believing in me and supporting me tremendously over the past few years. Also a big thank you to WMX Shop for the engines and parts and a sincere thank you to all my personal sponsors. Finally, I would also like to thank everyone around me who assisted and guided me.”
Although Wesley's active career as a rider is now over, he remains active in motocross. From now on, Verheyen will focus on: RacingskillsMXinternship and guiding riders on and off the track. So don't worry, you will still see Verheyen at the cross every week! Of course, Wes now also has more time for his family and daughter Olivia.
MXMag would like to thank Wesley for the many years as a top amateur and wishes him good luck with his new challenge!
