VIDEO: AJP test for the real enthusiast
AJP Belgium/Luxembourg wants to hold its own in the motocross world next season, especially in the amateur associations. For this they promote their AJP PR5 with a motocross edition for the real enthusiast.
AJP… What is an AJP? AJP is a Portuguese motorcycle brand that is mainly known in the enduro world. AJP Belgium/Luxembourg wants to change that by also allowing the bike to compete in motocross. As an enduro brand, they mainly focus on beginners and pilots who do not yet have much experience in motocross. AJP was founded in 1987 by Antonio Pinto, from 1996 to 2000 AJP won the national enduro championship five times in a row
We went together Nyl Kessen testing the 250 and 150 engines of AJP at a very special location. After adjusting the levers and handlebars on the motorcycle, the test could begin.
What did Nyls think of the 150?
At first glance the bike looks very good, it looks a bit like a mix of a Husqvarna and a KTM. The first thing I noticed was the easy steering in the corners. Some working points are the power of the engine and transmission, the first gear is very short and the second is a little too long. As with a real enduro engine, the engine performs best at low and medium speeds, at high speeds the engine makes little progress, this can be seen as both an advantage and a disadvantage. If I had to recommend the bike to someone, I would choose a novice rider as the bike is not aggressive but very comfortable. The most interesting thing in my opinion is the low price of the engine, this offers a great perspective for young beginners.

What did Yente think of the 250?
At first I felt like I was riding an electric bike. The engine handled extremely well, but it still lacked power to be on par with brands such as Yamaha, KTM or Honda. After riding the motorcycle for a while, I got used to it a bit more, but I still thought that the torque of the engine was not quite right, it still handled too much like a real enduro motorcycle, so I was not allowed to drive too high revs. . Changing the mapping turned out to be a big improvement, I was able to rev the engine a bit more and it already felt more like a real dirt bike. This AJP still falls short of being able to ride at a top level, but just like Nyls, I can definitely recommend this motorcycle to beginners or veterans who ride for fun and where the handling of the engine is more important than the power.

It is a very fun bike to ride, it handles better in the air than I expected and there is a lot of room for improvement such as:
- A complete DOMA exhaust €695

- New housing with modified motor characteristic 200 €
Why we think this is the ideal engine for beginners: We see it time and time again that beginners spend a lot of money on an expensive engine and in the end they can't handle the power or they only use the engine for half its power. Based on this insight, I can therefore recommend a motorcycle that handles extremely well, so that the rider first becomes familiar with the technique of motocross and later moves on to training speed.
