Disappointing GP of Lommel for De Waal
The tough Lommel track, where Vamo Honda's home GP took place, seemed to be the ideal place for Micha-Boy De Waal to once again show his skills in the GPs. Unfortunately, the spectacular Dutchman never reached his best level in Limburg. De Waal finished both heats in 22nd place, leaving him scoreless in 24th place.
Like most Dutch and Belgian riders, Micha-Boy De Waal grew up in the sand. Add to that the encouraging results in the past three GPs and it is understandable why rider and team were optimistic about the Limburg GP.
However, the start of the 14th round of the FIM MX2 World Championship on Saturday would set the tone for the rest of the weekend. In the qualifying race, De Waal started well but was pushed out in the first corner. As always, the No Fear Energy drink rider gave his all, but he never got into his rhythm. He had to settle for a very mediocre 27th qualifying place.
Although the large crowd and the sun left no doubt that Sunday was indeed a new day, the two heats were very similar. Twice Micha sent his CRF250R to a reasonable start, only to have it ruined each time by falling riders in front of him in the first corner. De Waal would therefore remain scoreless in both series. Yet he certainly had the prospect of more in the first race. From 34th place in the first round, he rose to 20th before falling back to 22nd place in the second half of the race.
The FIM MX2 Motocross World Championship will visit Switzerland this weekend where the 15th round will be held.
Micha-Boy De Waal: “This is really a weekend to forget as quickly as possible! For some reason it just turned square. I didn't find my pace and also in terms of speed it was not at all in proportion to what I am capable of. Especially because these are normally the types of jobs where I can perform well. We came to Lommel to fight for points again. Too bad, hopefully we can compete for points again next weekend.”
