Successful weekend for KTM Diga Junior Racing!
KTM Diga Junior Racing rider Emil Weckman achieved his best EMX125 performance ever in Lommel. Weckman, in his first season in the class, finished 11th and 13th in the heats. The two-time EMX150 champion finished eighth, on equal points with Filip Olsson. The sixth round of the EMX125 championship was Emil's third race for Dirk Saelen's team after switching for Ottobiano.
Emil Weckman was the only rider in action for the home race of the Belgian KTM Diga Junior Racing. However, the young Finn could take confidence from a strong performance at the Junior World Championships in Estonia last weekend. Last year he also raced to a double series victory in the EMX150 in Lommel. Although timed training proved to be a problem for 15-year-old Weckman in recent months, he immediately reached cruising speed in the Limburg GP. Thanks to an excellent 12th time, he qualified directly.
Three subsidiary classes in addition to the MXGP and MX2 and heavy rain made the Lommel sandpit heavier than ever for the first EMX125 round on Saturday evening. A difficult start made the challenge for the likeable KTM Diga Junior rider even greater. Weckman had a bad start and was hit in the hectic first corner, although fortunately he managed to stay straight. Emil then immediately went on the attack. He rose from a place outside the top 20 to 13th in the third round. Weckman would gain two more places to cross the line in 11th.
The traditional second EMX125 race on Sunday took place in dry, sunny conditions. The large crowd saw how the #125 piloted his KTM 125 SX to an excellent start. Weckman saw seventh place slip out of his hands when he fell during an overtaking maneuver. He dropped back to 17th place. Emil crashed a second time but was still able to finish 13th.
Weckman's teammate Tomas Kohut continued the momentum of recent weeks. Tomas came second (2-2) in the muddy Czech international competition in Kaplice. Tomas and Roni Kytönen Just like Emil Weckman, we will be working this weekend in Switzerland where both a round of the EMX125 and EMX250 are planned.
Emil Weckman: “I'm quite satisfied with my weekend in Lommel. The track did change seriously over the two days. On Saturday the course was very difficult with many ruts. On Sunday there were more pits. Anyway, I prefer it to be heavy, so you can see who has done their homework during the winter! Last year they had leveled the track too much for my liking. I had good speed in the two heats. Too bad I fell in the second moto because my start was really great! In the second race it took a while before I got a good rhythm. At the end I also felt that I had used up a lot of energy, so I could no longer attack like that. But hey, that's exactly what makes Lommel such a special race!”
