Herlings doubtful about title chances, but talks about new goal...
Red Bull KTM rider Jeffrey Herlings is very cautious about his chances of becoming the third “Rookie” in a row to take the MXGP world title crown. His entry into the MXGP class was immediately hampered by a broken hand and underestimating the competition in this premier class of motocross. However, the three-time MX2 World Champion has been able to adapt somewhat to the MXGP class and is currently within five points of second place in the standings.
The Dutchman has taken a total of six podiums, including one victory and five second places, and has thus won more trophies than fellow brand Tony Cairoli in the last seven races since his first appearance on the podium during the MXGP in Valkenswaard.
“I don't think I can win the championship without a bit of luck on my side, but of course you don't wish bad luck or injuries on anyone and we have to remain realistic.” says Herlings, who is one point behind third man Gautier Paulin and five points behind Clement Desalle. The gap to leader Cairoli is already 96 points, which is almost two full Grand Prix's with only seven to go on the calendar.
Herlings signing a new long term with KTM can ensure that a 1-2 is possible in the final standings of the MXGP and that would be a first for the Austrians. (Ken De Dijcker took third place on KTM as teammate Tony Cairoli won the title in 2013.)
“After such a bad start to the season, second place in the championship is not that bad, I would say.” he notes. “I feel like I should be able to give that back to the team because they have worked so hard for me. We may be on different teams (me and Tony), but at the end of the day we are one family.”
