Damiaens wins successful VLM-Cross in Dessel!
Due to the drought, it was anything but easy for the team of Rik Van Massenhoven and MC Dessel to complete the cross successfully. Yet they succeeded with flying colors! New circuit, new opportunities for the riders, but it was once again the dominant Dietger Damiaens who prevailed. Damiaens won both heats... Although it could have turned out differently.
Jens Van Meer was the fastest in the morning and the CKP Racing pilot clearly also had the good speed on the Kleine Boertang. In the first heat Jens took the holeshot, but after 3 corners his engine gave up the ghost. The victory fell almost like a gift into Dietger Damiaens' lap!
Home rider Wouter Van Massenhoven also completed a commendable race. Thanks to the squatter, the back problems were more or less under control and Wouter pushed through after a reasonable start. He finished five seconds behind Damiaens. A pilot with character, on a KTM with number three, that makes them nostalgic in Dessel 😉 Dieter Vromans pulled off a great comeback. Starting around tenth place, the Arendonk native came in as third and first MX2 pilot
Determined to take revenge, Van Meer took the holeshot in the second moto. Jens seemed to be heading for victory until he encountered problems with the front fork. Once again a strong Damiaens was able to take advantage! However, the 21-year-old Limburger could not rest on his laurels because Van Meer came up impressive in the final phase. To the delight of the audience, it was a very exciting final. Van Meer pulled out all the stops but ended up 0,4 seconds behind Dietger. Frustrating for Van Meer, who certainly has the form to compete with Damiaens. So will definitely be continued! Van Massenhoven ended his day in third place and was therefore able to take his place next to Damiaens on the podium! Steven De Beuckelaer finished third in the final standings among the 450s. This time Banken was the best MX2 rider, good for 4th place overall and a narrow winner in the MX2 ahead of Vromans.
In difficult times you recognize the go-getters. Definitely kudos to the organization on this one. Thanks to a shuttle bus, the public was able to save their legs for the travel to and from itt trail. It was a bit further than usual due to the alternative riders' park. A lot of work had also been done to make the circuit as dust-free as possible. Congratulations!
