Thomas Kjer Olsen takes first ever MX2 Grand Prix victory
Thomas Kjer Olsen has won the Latvian Grand Prix with a series victory and a second place. It was his very first GP victory of his career for the Dane, who became EMX250 European champion last season. This was already the second victory of the season for the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing team of team manager Jacky Martens.
Thomas Kjer Olsen dominates first series…
Thomas Kjer Olsen already won the Qualifying Race yesterday and showed himself to be the strongest in the first series. The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider only had to let Spaniard Jorge Garcia Prado go ahead at the start, but then immediately took over the lead on the opening lap to take his very first MX2 series victory. Behind the tall Dane there was some spectacle to be seen with World Cup leader Pauls Jonass and the Swiss Jeremy Seewer. Yet it was the World Suzuki rider who managed to take second place from home rider Pauls Jonass in the last lap. Our compatriot Julien Lieber crossed the finish line in eighth place and for Kemea Yamaha rider Brent Van Doninck the first series did not go as well. Van Doninck was in ninth place just before halfway through the race when he crashed spectacularly and had to go to the riders' park.
Jonass wins second series, Olsen takes GP win…
After his holeshot, Pauls Jonass had to give the lead to Covington a few laps later, but he made a mistake a few laps later and Jonass regained the lead and took victory in this second series. Second place went to the winner of the first series Thomas Kjer Olsen who calmly worked his way up from ninth position after the start to second place, which was good for the Grand Prix victory. Third place was Conrad Mewse who completed the success of the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna team. Julien Lieber ended up in second place halfway through the race when he had a very spectacular crash and only finished eighth. Kemea Yamaha rider Brent Van Doninck tried to survive the restart after his crash in the first series and would eventually finish 14th in this second series.
