Sihvonen retains lead in ADAC Youngster Cup.
Miro Sihvonen of the Belgian KTM Diga Junior Racing team successfully defended his leading position in the ADAC Youngster Cup this weekend. Sihvonen dominated the first heat in Jauer. However, in the second race, won by the Slovak Richard Sikyna, the young Finn had to retire after dislocating his shoulder. Sikyna also won the final standings ahead of Tim Koch and World Suzuki rider Zach Pichon.
After a double series victory during the opening round in Fürstlich Drehna and his impressive EMX250 victory in Valkenswaard last weekend, Miro Sihvonen to the “Am Hahnberg” circuit with confidence. The KTM Diga Junior Racing rider reinforced his intentions in a strong first series. He took the holeshot and then led from start to finish, home rider Tom Koch came second. Sikyna came back very strong after a bad start, recovering from 20 to 3.
With Richard Sikyna and Tom Koch first and second, the second race ended in line with expectations after the opener, except for Miro Sihvonen. It started poorly in the closing stages. He finished 8th after the first lap, but a mistake knocked him back to 16th position. However, Miro started a convincing comeback. Halfway through the heat he was already eighth. Things then went wrong in the battle for fifth place. Although he just avoided a fall on a slippery table jump, the devil was in the tail. Due to the impact of the landing, the 18-year-old talent dislocated his right shoulder. Driving further was no longer possible because of the pain. Fortunately, the first investigations showed that Miro suffered no damage from the dislocation.
For the 16 year old Zach Pichon Jauer became a breakthrough. In strong company he sent his Suzuki to third place, just 5 seconds behind the winner. Pichon also did an excellent job in the standings of the ADAC Youngster Cup. He is now second, one point behind Sihvonen. Our compatriot Thomas Vermijl scored points in both heats and finished 4th in the day's standings.
Miro Sihvonen: “What a strange day! Driving in the first race went well. I was able to pull away easily after taking the lead. This way I was able to run for 10 seconds until I noticed something strange on my rear wheel. After that I drove a bit more conservatively, but I was still able to win by three seconds.
Even after my early mistake in that second moto, I didn't rush things. I certainly wasn't pushing or anything when things went wrong. They had sprayed before the race and that table jump was tricky. When I hit the road I slid away, but I was still able to avoid a crash. The landing was far from optimal! My shoulder dislocated upon impact. For me it was the first time that I suffered a dislocation, but the pain was so bad that I could no longer continue. Fortunately, there is no damage, we will monitor the shoulder carefully to get to the start in Kegums as best as possible. My day in Jauer ended disappointingly, fortunately I am still in the lead in the championship, even if only by one point.”
