KEMEA Yamaha Official MX2 Race Report, GP8 Teutschenthal, Germany
The Teutschenthal GP is one of the most iconic races on the GP calendar and provides exciting races every year on the beautiful natural circuit. A heavy cloudburst and storm on Friday evening flooded everything and despite pleasant sunshine on Saturday and Sunday, the course became very difficult and technical with deep ruts.
After some poor competitions, Benoit was looking forward to getting back on the German circuit and showing his real speed. Already on Saturday he felt good and won the qualifying race, his very first pole position. After a good start, he remained calm and made no mistakes, crossing the line first. Alvin rode a solid series and finished 12th. Brent crashed in the initial phase and did not get further than 24th place.
As always in Teutschenthal, thousands of enthusiastic fans witnessed a solid start from Benoit in the first series. The Frenchman was in sixth place and was close to the leaders when he suddenly had to leave the race with technical problems. Brent, who was completely outside the start, did not have the best start and rode outside the points on the first pass. He returned to 13th position. Alvin crashed on the first lap and resumed the race far behind the rest. He did not give up but failed to score points with a 27th place.
In the last heat, Benoit again got off to a good start and was immediately able to join the fight for the lead. He rode in second place the entire race and although he came closer to the leader several times, he had to settle for second place. With this, Paturel finished tenth in the day's results and remains fifth in the World Championship standings. Alvin started outside the top 20 and came back to 16th place. The Swede finished 21st in the day's results. In the second series it was Brent's turn to get acquainted with the German soil in the first corner. He was unable to avoid some fallen riders and crashed to the ground. Once he left, he still had to pass the pit lane to straighten his steering wheel. He drove strong lap times afterwards, but after a fall in the final phase he left the race. He finished 17th in the final standings and falls to 8th place in the World Championship standings.
Benoit Paturel: “ There were definitely some positive things to remember this weekend. The speed was there and I felt good on the bike all weekend. I was very satisfied with the victory in the qualifications, because a good starting position is very important in Teutschenthal. After a few bad weekends I felt good again, and that is important. Unfortunately I lost all podium chances due to a technical problem in the first heat, but that's MX. Fortunately I was able to confirm my speed in the second heat and finish second shortly after the leader. I'm already looking forward to going to Ernée next week. A home GP is always special and I definitely want to do my best for all the home fans!”
Alvin Ostlund: “ This was another tough weekend! Looking back on the weekend I am happy with my riding and the speed, but I am disappointed with the results. Qualifying was good with a twelfth place. I had a good starting position and got off to a good start in the first heat. I was in the top ten when someone crashed in front of me and I fell to the ground with them. I fell all the way to last place. In the second series I lost some places at the start because I came into contact with someone. After that the driving actually went quite well. Now I just have to get those results.”
Brent Vandoninck: “ This was a weekend to forget as quickly as possible... I don't think I have ever ridden so badly this year... I never had a good feeling on the circuit. I crashed in qualifying and perhaps gave up a little too early, because a good starting position is very important here. In the first series on Sunday I had a bad start and didn't get further than 13th place. In the second series I had a better start, but I was no longer able to avoid the crash in the first corner. I almost doubled when I came out of the pit lane, but I still wanted to continue. I rode good lap times that were close to the leaders, but when I fell again a few laps before the end, I finished... I'm glad that we have the next race next week so that I can quickly recover. It is not good to dwell on it for too long and for me it can be Saturday again soon.”
