No pay for working for Micha-Boy De Waal
Few results are self-evident in the extremely competitive MX2 World Championship. With 36 riders at the start - including 15 factory riders - Vamo Honda rider Micael Ivanov managed to score his first World Championship point of the season in Germany. Micha-Boy De Waal was also briefly in the top 20 but had bad luck in the second moto.
The rolling, clear Talkessel circuit was hit hard by heavy rain on Friday. This made it very difficult to drive, especially on Saturday morning. Fortunately, as the day progressed, conditions improved. After a bad start, Micha-Boy De Waal completed a decent qualifying race in which he finished 23rd. Teammate Ivanov qualified 26th.
Before Sunday, a lot of work had been done on the track, and the fast condition of the track during the warm-up session was clearly ideal for Ivanov. The multiple Bulgarian champion recorded a good 14th fastest time. Micael also showed what he has to offer in both heats. In the first moto he had a bad start, but after a duel with Freek van der Vlist he came in 20th, 0,6 seconds behind the Dutchman. In typical MX2 style, the differences were also very small in the second round. This time Ivanov had to make do with the most thankless position. Although he finished 21st, the difference with 17th was barely 5,8 seconds…
Micha-Boy De Waal started weakly in the first series. However, the popular No Fear Energy rider fought his way to the front based on character. When De Waal had climbed to 23, he made a mistake. Micha was still able to come back strong, his lap times were even comparable to those of the top 16, to finish 22nd. In the second moto the driver from Veen sent his CRF250R to a great start. De Waal was then able to advance to 12th place until things went wrong when he had to swerve for a fallen rider just before a jump. The trailing Ivo Monticelli could no longer avoid Micha in the air, causing both riders to fall hard. Fortunately, De Waal did not suffer any serious injuries from the blow. Unfortunately, it was no longer possible to drive further.
Micha-Boy De Waal: “The weekend started quite difficult because the track was so muddy during free practice. Things didn't go well in the timed training either, so I had to start the qualifying race with a bad place behind the fence. The race itself went okay, and the riding on Sunday was also good. Too bad I couldn't get more out of it in the second moto after I had such a good start. I would certainly like to thank BT No Fear Jumbo and Vamo for their support. New opportunities in France!”
Michael Ivanov: “It's a good feeling that my first point has (finally) been received! In terms of pace it was good. The entire first moto I was in the battle for 19th place. There was nothing between me and van der Vlist, but just before the finish he overtook me again, making me 20th. The second race was very similar. I was in a battle with David Herbreteau for place 20 for a long time. Unfortunately I finished in his wheel. But I feel good and I'm definitely looking forward to the next GP in Ernée!”
