Antonio Cairoli spoils his home crowd in MXGP of Trentino
Antonio Cairoli may have taken his best home Grand Prix victory of his career in Pietramurata. Cairoli was able to win the opening series in a controlled manner, but in the second series he had to wait until the last lap to take the Grand Prix victory in a great chase series and with the support of the thousands of Italian MX fans.
Cairoli maintains control and wins first series…
Antonio Cairoli was victorious in a very boring first series, the only bright spot was that Wilvo Yamaha rider Arnaud Tonus was looking forward to it and just over halfway through the series he passed Gajser into second place and started to put pressure on leader Cairoli. But for the rest, this first series didn't really amount to much and it was mainly a train ride behind Cairoli with Tonus, Gajser, Paulin and our two compatriots Desalle and Van Horebeek. Kevin Strijbos, even after his good start, could only make up one place and finished ninth. 24MX Honda rider Damon Graulus took his first World Championship points of the season with a 19th place, while Ken De Dijcker did not get further than a 26th place in this opening series.
Antonio Cairoli gives his fans a Grand Prix they will not soon forget...
How boring the first series was… how exciting the second series was. The winner of the first series Antonio Cairoli took care of that. Home rider Cairoli went to the first corner together with Gajser, but the Slovenian kept the throttle open a little longer and took the holeshot. Cairoli himself crashed and had to chase from 16th position. Cairoli therefore started with an impossible task, but started picking up rider by rider until he was able to pass second man Evgeny Bobryshev on the very last lap and thus still take the overall victory in his home Grand Prix. This of course created an exuberant atmosphere around the circuit in Pietramurata where the home crowd was crazy about this victory by their own Tony Cairoli.
Our compatriots firmly in the points…
Clement Desalle was our best compatriot in Trentino, the Moster Energy Kawasaki rider took fifth place twice. Jeremy Van Horebeek was also twice in the top ten with sixth and eighth place and Kevin Strijbos took ninth place in the first series but fell outside the points in the revival. Damon Graulus 19-16 in the heats immediately took seven points in his first GP of the season. For Ken De Dijcker, there were no points with a 26 & 22 place.
