Why La chinelle is no longer free
At the end of the previous edition, organizer David Rossomme had already dropped so much. It has now been confirmed that admission to the 12 hours of La Chinelle is no longer free. This measure was necessary due to lower income and rising organizational costs.
More and more (young) Flemish riders and spectators are discovering this mythical competition that was created by Joel Robert. The course, the atmosphere and the ambiance are incomparable. At the beginning of August, around 20 to 25 spectators come every year to the Franchimont esplanade, near Philippeville!
The 12 hours of La Chinelle remains an icon for both amateurs and seasoned pros. And organizer Eventsee is not resting on its laurels. For example, a few years ago a 'Mini Chinelle' was created for youth riders and vintage riders will also get their money's worth. In short, La Chinelle is one big motorcycle party!
A (very) democratic price
Apart from the success, both sporting and in terms of public attendance, the economic reality is less rosy. “Despite all our efforts, the last two organizations were always loss-making,” says the organizer David Rossomme. “The reasons are multiple: organizational costs continue to rise, we also see a steady decline in turnover in the various bars. That is a general trend, for all events. Attracting financial partners for a competition like La Chinelle has not become any easier. That is why we had to find a solution to achieve the necessary stability in terms of budget.”
That solution is a paying entrance. After 37 years of free admission, this is a shock, but Rosomme and EventSee want this legendary competition to remain a popular festival. “Until last year, parking was chargeable, but now it is free, but one entrance ticket costs a very democratic €5 per person. So nothing will change for those who come alone. For those who come in a group, it involves a small effort.” The fact that Rosomme did not want to increase the registration fee for drivers and teams is to his credit. “We want nothing more than for as many riders as possible to enjoy this experience. Participating in La Chinelle is already expensive in terms of materials, we are aware of that.”
The 38th edition of the 12 hours of La Chinelle will take place on August 11, 12 and 13 in Franchimont. We will keep you informed when registrations open!
