Product test: Leatt GPX 5.5 helmet
Leatt is known for its protective equipment and revolutionary techniques to keep riders safe. A unique approach is chosen in which there is no room for compromises!
Last year Leatt entered the helmet market with the GPX 6.5 helmet. We are not going to talk about the top in the Leatt helmet range, but about the new one Leatt GPX 5.5 V15.
Leatt wouldn't be Leatt without pioneering technology. The most important aspect of protection is Leatt's patented 360° Turbine Helmet Technology. These smart blue rubbers made from Armourgel are normally flexible, but they become harder as the impact increases during a fall. Leatt himself indicates that the impact on the head and brain in the case of a concussion is up to 30% less. The acceleration during rotation - the biggest culprit that can cause damage to your brain - would even be 40% less! Check out the clip below and you'll be completely involved.
It is also striking how Leatt consciously opted for a smaller scale. The Leatt helmet has an outer shell that is 10% smaller, which means that up to 20% less rotational forces are transferred to the neck, head and brain. In terms of material for the bowl, Leatt uses Composite matrix (fiberglass and carbon mix).
Our findings
So much for the theory. What about the practice? The special look of the Leatt helmet may not be everyone's favorite. I didn't know what to think about it at first either. But during my testing period I started to like it more and more! At the bottom you can see the different models that are available.
I have been trying the Leatt helmet for a few months now. And I actually love how well it works! As I said, the design has now also fully received my approval. You can best describe the look as futuristic. In terms of fit, I had some issues at first with how it was a bit tight on my forehead. After a while this improved a lot and now the fit is much better. Your head may be a different shape than mine. Maybe this doesn't even bother you at all!
How the Leatt helmet is tailored to function properly with the Leatt Fusion 3 vest (more about that in a next test) is also a big plus. The combination helmet-body protector works perfectly!
De 2017 Leatt GPX 5.5 V15 helmet is also light and comfortable. It is even a lot lighter than its predecessor. As soon as it gets warmer, you will also notice the excellent ventilation. I don't think there are any helmets on the market that will keep your head fresher than this one! The difference is that big! And a cooler brain simply works better. The fit is exemplary and your glasses - I wear Oakley myself - also fit well. The strap of the goggles at the back is slightly different than what you are used to due to the ventilation slots there. Just take some getting used to. The function of the visor has been well thought out. It was designed to break off in the event of a fall. There is more space at the back of the helmet because the shape has been optimized to fit your neck brace.
The recommended retail price for the Leatt GPX 5.5 V15 in the different color designs is: € 479,95. Anyone who opts for the sober black or white version pays €429,95
In both cases, this is a lot lower than the top model, the Leatt GPX 6.5 Carb V01, which costs €649,95
This makes this GPX 5.5 V15 certainly a helmet that deserves to be on your shortlist if you take safety seriously and are looking for a new helmet. Compared to what is available on the market, this is an exceptional product!
