ONK Quads: Belgian wins in Varsseveld!
Last weekend the second round of the “Open Dutch Championship” Quad Motocross was held in the Dutch Varsseveld. The top players from the Low Countries competed against each other!
In the first heat the crowd in Varsseveld saw Marc de Vries take the holeshot. However, his empire did not last long. The Dutch top rider Mike van Grinsven quickly took over the lead, but never relinquished it in this round. Behind van Grinsven we found de Vries who had competition for second place from Joe Maessen and also from the Flemish Davy De Cuyper. Unfortunately, this Davy De Cuyper quickly dropped out of the race and so did Joe Maessen with one lap to go. This gave Marc de Vries second place ahead of Belgian Jan Vlaeymans and Ricardo Phoelich. Roy van den Borne finished in fifth place after a poor start.
The second heat started with a holeshot by Joe Maessen, who first passed the timekeeping. However, the man had no luck and immediately dropped out of the match. That seemed to clear the way for Mike van Grinsven. However, the Dutchman was not awarded a second heat victory. With three laps to go, the talented Dutchman made a mistake, which dropped him to position six. Our compatriot Jan Vlaeymans eagerly took advantage of this mistake. In turn, he had already driven a huge catch-up race to get back from fifteenth place to second place. The fact that he ultimately saw his catch-up race, due to Van Grinsven's mistake, rewarded with victory made it extra sweet. Ricardo Phoelich moved up to second place and Marc de Vries to third. Mike van Grinsven, who was knocked back to sixth after his mistake, pulled out all the stops to eventually cross the finish line in fourth place. That for Roy van den Borne.
After Van Grinsven's mistake, Jan Vlaeymans' fourth place in the second series was also good news. Because this way the Belgian could reach the podium in Varsseveld as the overall winner. With his third place and a series victory, he was 3 points better than his Dutch competitor Van Grinsven and 5 better than Mike de Vries.
