Van Horebeek shines, Cairoli champion
The third and final race of the International Italian Championship was held today in Ottpbiano, near Milan. He proved this afternoon that the circuit is one where Jeremy Van Horebeek can perform well. The Jerre recorded his first victory of the season! In the final standings of the Italian Championship, Van Horebeek finished second behind Tony Cairoli.
In the opening series, Van Horebeek took advantage of a mistake by Cairoli. Much worse than Cairoli's one misstep was Jeffrey Herlings' spectacular crash. The Dutch MX2 world champion lost control of his bike, after which the following Tim Gajser in turn could no longer avoid Herlings. Check here the clip. Jeffrey had to abandon the race, Gajser came in 10th.
Van Horebeek also unleashed his devils in the Superfinal. The Yamaha factory rider led the first two laps. Then he had to tolerate Cairoli. Meanwhile, the third Superinal victory of the season for TC222. Van Horebeek neatly held on to his second position ahead of José Butron, Romain Febvre and the very strong Jorge Prado.
The young KTM promise did not win the MX2 race, but still scored enough points to win the MX2 title. Prado eventually won with a 20-point lead over HRC-Honda driver Michele Cervellin. Cervellin was the strongest today, ahead of Prado and TM factory rider Samuele Bernardini. Julien Lieber was still partying last week. In Ottobiano he had to settle for 15th place.
For Ken De Dycker, Ottobiano became a turning point. Illness and the adjustment to his new engine threw a spanner in the works during the previous two races. Today Keeno performed much better. The Jtech-Suzuki rider finished sixth in the MX1 round, finishing 12th in the super final. Glenn Coldenhoff had to retire in the first series due to mechanical failure. Fortunately, 'The Hoff' was able to end his event nicely with a solid 6th place in the super final.
