De Dycker dominates VLM Opening Cross Helchteren!
Somehow he owed it to his class. Yet Ken De Dycker (Van Boom-Suzuki) showed off his calling card with two series victories in the Helchteren VLM Opening Cross! Newcomer Cédric Grobben (Dam-KTM) also performed at a high level. He came second twice. The Young Brit Daniel Thornhill (Cab Screens Husqvarna) surprisingly finished third.
Wesley Verheyen, the reigning VLM Inters Open champion, was the fastest in the first round. However, Ken De De Dycker didn't let the grass grow under his breath for long. After a poor start, De Dycker quickly took the lead and would not relinquish it. Cédric Grobben, one of the big favorites in our poll, finished second after finishing third. The English guest driver James Harrison was also in excellent form. Starting just inside the top 10, the young Cab Screens Husqvarna pilot moved up to third place ahead of Verheyen. In the MX2, Frederik Daenen was clearly the strongest.
In the second series Keeno had to tolerate Grobben for several laps. The 21-year-old Limburger confirmed all the good things he had already shown last year in Olmen, Reet, Lummen and Sint-Huybrechts Lille, among others. Cédric had to give up on De Dycker's routine. Ken rode smoothly to victory again. Now Harrison's teammate finished third ahead of Salaets and Seronval. A regular Sven Breugelmans finished sixth just after Seronval thanks to a 7th and 9th place.
Victory for Kevin Schellens in MX2
Home rider Thomass Vermijl took a resounding victory in the second heat. He had 17 seconds left over Kevin Schellens. Thanks to two second places, Schellens - last year 3rd in the Inters MX2 - took the day's victory! A satisfied Frederik Daenen was allowed on the day's podium. With 46 Inters at the start, many riders in all categories (pilot parking 1 full!) and fun competitions, Helchteren certainly leaves you wanting more. So very promising for an exciting VLM season! Next week the VLM caravan will travel to Lommel.
