Benoit Paturel in top form in Lacapelle
As the last biggest test before the start of the MXGP season in Qatar, the MX2 was extra interesting in Lacapelle-Marival. With Pauls Jonass, Jeremy Seewer and Benoit Paturel, the three title favorites competed against each other for the first time in France. Paturel and Seewer each won a round, but the Kemea-Yamaha rider was especially impressive in the Superfinal. Benoit finished 5th and first MX2 rider, Seewer came in 7th overall.
Jonass' fastest qualifying time was already a sign of the times. Seewer and Paturel finished second and third in that timed training. Unfortunately, Jonass - whether or not surprised by the strong crosswind - had a hard fall during a jump in the first series. Fortunately without much problem. Still, Jonass chose not to drive anymore. Seewer took maximum advantage, Paturel finished second in his wake.
Seewer took the holeshot, making a double victory seem possible. However, due to a problem with his rear brake, the sympathetic Swiss had to slow down. Paturel didn't let herself be told that twice. The decisive victory of series two also gave him the overall victory in the class. In the closing super final, the Frenchman recorded a brilliant second half of the match. Benoit passed Seewer and amid the MX1 violence he finished less than four seconds fifth behind Kevin Strijbos. On the Belgian side, Brent Van Doninck finished 8th (8-6). Lars Greekpoor, the only Dutchman who took action, finished 20th.
Both EMX250 champion Thomas Kjer Olsen and Conrad Mewse confirmed today all the good we had seen in Hawkstone. The young Rockstar Energy Husqvarna riders finished third and fourth respectively. With Thomas Covington fifth, Jacky Martens can look back on an excellent dress rehearsal!
