Febvre about the Herlings effect in the MXGP class
The 2015 MXGP World Champion Romain Febvre has responded to the arrival of 3-time MX2 World Champion Jeffrey Herlings who will also become one of his new rivals in the MXGP class. Febvre hints that we might see a “Rookie” at the top of the MXGP series again.
Febvre was the surprise of 2015 by immediately winning the world title in his debut year in the MXGP class because Tony Cairoli had already been master of the class since 2009. Last year the Factory Monster Energy Yamaha rider had to deal with another “Rookie” who had also successfully graduated from the MX2 class, namely Tim Gajser (MX2 World Champion - 2015). This Slovenian would eventually give Honda their first world title in the premier class since 2000.
The Frenchman took his first Grand Prix victory in 2014 during the Brazilian Grand Prix in the MX2 class when Herlings was sidelined injured, but will now have to clash with the Dutchman again. “It's hard to know what to expect, but he's certainly a very talented rider and I'm sure he won't be fighting for tenth. I think he is comparable to Gajser and he will immediately compete for the win,” says Fransman.
“It's always interesting to see what a rider can do when he makes the transition from the MX2 class to the MXGP and what will particularly interest me are the races to be able to race with him again after two years,” added the #461 still to it. “It's a new face for the MXGP class and that can only be good for it.”
