Ryan Dungey and KTM win first SMX Riders Cup and Manufacturers Cup.
Ryan Dungey and the KTM team emerged victorious in the first edition of the Monster Energy SMX Riders Cup and Manufacturers Cup. In the Veltins-Arena of Gelsenkirchen, Germany, it was KTM that was the winner, because both the Riders Cup and the Manufacturers Cup were simply colored orange.
Monster Energy SMX Riders Cup
The riders had to compete three times in the Veltins Arena for the coveted “Riders Cup”. In the first series it was MXGP World Champion Tim Gajser who, after the holeshot, also narrowly won the series ahead of the Americans Ryan Dungey and Zach Osborne. Yamaha rider Romain Febvre finished fourth ahead of the KTM tandem Herlings-Musquin. Our only compatriot Brent Van Doninck who started for the Yamaha Team took thirteenth place and became the first MX2 rider in this first series.
The second heat went to Frenchman Romain Febvre who took the lead when Tim Gajser spectacularly lost control of the bike and crashed. Second place went to Marvin Musquin who preceded his teammate Ryan Dungey. We did see a strong recovery from Jeffrey Herlings, who came from last place to finish fifth behind Jordi Tixier after a fall at the start. Yamaha Kemea rider Van Doninck finished sixteenth.
In the final series we went to a duel between KTM riders Ryan Dungey and Jeffrey Herlings, where the MX2 World Champion ultimately won. Jeffrey Herlings took the win ahead of his teammates Ryan Dungey and Marvin Musquin. In the final standings after these three series, it was the American Ryan Dungey who showed the most regularity and thus became the first winner of the “Monster Energy SMX Riders Cup”. In addition to Dungey, the podium became even more orange with Jeffrey Herlings in second and Marvin Musquin in third.
