Robin Bakens ends the season with entertaining matches
Meanwhile, the Belgian motocross season ended three weeks ago on a beautiful new track in Kester. But that doesn't mean the season is actually over. For example, Robin Bakens participated in the Loon-Plage beach cross two weeks ago and last week the final of the Open Zeeland Championship in Axel.
We have known for some time that beach crossing is available in Bakens, but the highly regarded Loon-Plage beach crossing is something else entirely. In any case, the timed training sessions went quite well. Robin could do a 3 on a circuit of only 4 minutese set time.
When driving up to the starting bar it became clear that a good start was going to be very important. There were no fewer than 67 pilots at the start and some of them were very fast names. A second place in the first corner, behind GP pilot Maxime Renaux, was the result of a good reaction at the gate and a top performance from Bakens' standard 450cc Kawasaki. After many matches in the top 6, Bakens was able to reach the 4e secure a place in this first round of three.
In the second moto Robin Bakens again had a good start. But the Kawasaki pilot lost concentration for a moment and fell on the first lap, almost the entire pack passed him. At that moment it was all or nothing for the Waaslander. During the race Bakens had very little time to look at the pit board, so he was very surprised when he arrived at the finish and was told that he was still 5th.e had arrived.
In the third moto we get a reflection of the first moto, another crash in the first lap that immediately throws a spanner in the works and again a nice comeback to 5e place. This 4-5-5 score was enough for a 4e place overall in the Loon-Plage beachcross in 2016.
The final of the Open Zeeland Championship in Axel was on the program last week, a race close to home for Robin Bakens. Even though the Kawasaki pilot should have known every grain of sand, the timed training did not go smoothly at all, with a 4e result in time. Not bad, but it could be better.
In the first moto the start of the Herbalife supported rider was not great. He came out of the first corner outside the top 10. When overtaking the pack, Bakens tried a new line, but that went terribly wrong, his front wheel went over the embankment and the Kawasaki ended up next to the circuit. After another catch-up game, Robin Bakens came 4the across the finish line. Later he was told that one of his competitors was out of the rankings and he finished 3rde was classified.
In the second moto Bakens made it a lot easier for himself, holeshot and get away. He was still nervous during the first few corners, but after that he was able to get a nice pace and built up a nice lead. This victory in combination with his 3e place in the first heat was also good enough for the day victory!
