KEMEA Yamaha Official MX team: SMX Cup, Veltins Arena Germany
Two weeks after the highlight of the year in Maggiora, the GP caravan went to the Veltins arena in Gelsenkirchen for the first time for the very first SMX cup. In this drivers and brands cup, each manufacturer may enter three drivers and a joker. Initially, both Brent Vandoninck and Benoit Paturel were selected for this match together with Romain Febvre and Justin Barcia. However, last week Benoit and Barcia dropped out. As a result, Frenchman Yannis Irsuti was called up as third drivers to compete with the other brands together with Brent and Febvre.
On the fast super motocross circuit, the riders received two training sessions to get used to the circuit and the unusual conditions for them. Brent once again switched to his trusty YZ250F for this occasion.
In the first heat Brent got off to a good start. He was soon in twelfth place and had to leave only one rider ahead. He arrived as the first MX2 rider.
In the second moto it was a little more difficult for Brent. He arrived in 16th place but had some nice duels during the race with Gautier Paulin and other MXGP riders.
Also in the final round it was difficult for Brent to make up ground on the technical circuit after a bad start. Brent crossed the line in 17th place.
In the overall individual final standings Brent finished 15th in Gelsenkirchen. This made him the second MX2 rider after Jeremy Seewer.
Yamaha finished fifth in the constructors' final standings. The victory went to KTM ahead of Honda and Kawasaki.
Brent Vandoninck: “The first match was my best match, but also my best start of the evening. I had fun and was happy with the result. In the second race I had a bad start and was already behind from the beginning. I also had a bad start in the final race, but I was able to benefit from the many crashes. All in all I had fun. It was a fun evening and an entertaining set-up for the matches. In any case, I feel honored that Yamaha chose me for this event, and it was nice to represent our brand together with Romain and Yannis.”
