Arnhem produces fun duels and winners!
Today, after years of 'silence', another supercross was organized in the Arnhem GelreDome! With Malcolm Stewart, Tim Gajser, Romain Febvre, Cedric Soubeyras and other French supercross toppers such as Thomas Ramette, the organization could count on a nice field of participants.
However, we must start by saying that the turnout was somewhat disappointing and that here too the motocross crowd excelled in its absence. But that didn't spoil the fun for those present and, in retrospect, those who stayed at home were wrong!
Now to the races, where the format in Arnhem meant that we got to see two 'Supercross Class' finals to determine the European Supercross champion. In addition, we also had a super final that in turn determined the 'King of Arnhem'. In the timed training we saw Romain Febvre set the fastest time. The 2015 world champion was faster than Malcolm Stewart, Tim Gajser and Cedric Soubeyras.
In the first 'SX450' final we also saw Romain Febvre take the holeshot. The Frenchman was immediately chased by Tim Gajser. Lap after lap, Romain Febvre remained calm under the pressure of the Slovenian to eventually take the victory, ahead of the Honda pilot and Cedric Soubeyras who had moved from eighth place, past Thomas Ramette and Angelo Pellegrini, among others, to third. The man from whom much was expected, Malcolm Stewart got off to a poor start. But he managed to come back to 5th place, after which he crashed and only finished 16th.
In the second 'SX450' final we saw a poorer start from Romain Febvre. Malcolm Stewart now had a better start and managed to speed ahead. The young man briefly had a hard time with Matteo Bonini to take over second place. But once Matteo Bonini was over, leader Thomas Ramette quickly fell. Malcolm Stewart raced to victory after his overtakes. Behind Malcolm, Romain Febvre also cut through the peloton. The Yamaha pilot ultimately relegated the European SX champion Thomas Ramette to third place. Tim Gajser, who was introduced to the ground in the GelreDome several times in this heat, finished seventh.
With his victory and his second place, Romain Febvre had a firm grip on the European Supercross title. This for Tim Gajser and Thomas Ramette.
In the super final we saw a good start from all the top players. For example, in the early rounds we saw Angelo Pellegrini take on Romain Febvre. These two often train on the Italian's SX course, but they still fought each other hard. This caused some delay and Tim Gajser followed by Cedric Soubeyras also joined the fight. After 1/3 of the match, both Romain Febvre and Tim Gajser passed the persistent Angelo Pellegrini. The two top players from the World Cup came to blows and gave an intense duel in front of the crowd. With about 4 laps to go, Tim Gajser managed to pass the French former world champion, Romain Febvre. He tried to match the fast pace of the Slovenian MXGP world champion, but ultimately had to give him the win. Behind these gentlemen, Cedric Soubeyras passed Angelo Pellegrini and finished third. After a dramatic start, Malcolm Stewart came back to a good fourth place, also ahead of Angelo Pellegrini.
In this way the prizes are nicely distributed, Romain Febvre wins the European Supercross Championship with the two 'Main Events'. And Tim Gajser wins the 'King of Arnhem' trophy in this super final.
