Heartbreaking BK final for Graulus
24MX Lucas Oil Honda rider Damon Graulus entered the final race of the Motocross Championships in Kester in second place, seven points behind Brent Van Doninck. However, due to a crash during time training, the day looked like no one could have expected.
Graulus broke the metacarpal of his right hand in that crash. Immediately all hope of the Belgian title was gone. The 21-year-old talent had no choice but to throw in the towel. At the time of the unfortunate incident where a slower rider unexpectedly cut him off, Damon was just at the top of the table. Graulus tried to start again, but due to the nature of his injury it was impossible to suppress the pain. Tomorrow the Vossem resident will consult Dr. Toon Claes for further research. Veteran Kevin Strijbos ultimately took the title. Graulus finished his first BC among the big boys in fifth place.
Damon Graulus: “What a blow, mentally! We worked very hard towards this and I felt strong. Actually, I immediately felt at home on the new Kester circuit. The club had done a fantastic job with a very nice, natural circuit. The fact that I didn't even have the opportunity to fight for the title in those circumstances is very sad. With my three-point lead over Kevin Strijbos it would never have been easy anyway. On the other hand, there were certainly possibilities. Now, however, we will never know how things could turn out!”
