Test Kawasaki KX-F 250 2017
Published on 17/08/2016Scoop test 2017 Kawasaki KX-F 250: simple, balanced and efficient!
One year after presenting us with a thoroughly revised KX-F 450, Kawasaki is back this year with a KX-F 250 that follows in the footsteps of its big sister. An accessible and efficient machine that shows that simplicity can also be accompanied by a high level of performance...

On the beautiful Zacca Station circuit, near Los Angeles in sunny California, we were able to discover the brand new Kawasaki KX-F 250. Anyone who knows the 450 2016 model well will not be entering unknown territory, because this 250 model has the same standard features as its big sister; Naturally, these features are adapted to the cylinder capacity.
Naturally, the upholstery immediately catches the eye. Its plastic has been completely revised, with very extensive ventilation slots that reach to the rear number plates. The rear mudguard is more aerodynamic and contains 2 air intakes that are perfectly combined with the new air box; This whole ensures better ventilation of this small KX-F.
We also note that the saddle is flatter in line with the tank, which makes it look rather slim and quite modern. The tank capacity was expanded from 6,1 to 6,4 liters. This motorcycle is narrower. 2 cm has been saved at the end of the radiators; between the legs 6 mm. These changes provide greater ergonomics, maneuverability and stability.
As for the suspension, the Showa shock absorber has been revised, the spring weighs 285 grams less and the connecting rod ratio has been optimized. The fork consists of the new Showa SFF type 2 model of 48 mm and is distinguished by its compression spring on the right cylinder as well as by its expansion function on the left side. The fork joints offer 4 control positions and a steering position that can also be changed using the repositioning of the footrests.
The aluminum frame has been examined step by step to limit the weight as much as possible. The front part under the steering column is forged into the mass to make the whole more sturdy; the rear part, on the other hand, consists of cast aluminum. The swing arm was also revised and now weighs 190 grams less.
As for the complete braking system, Kawasaki has once again opted for the Braking brand and beautiful petal-shaped brake discs.
As for the finish, we see sober graphic elements cast into the mass, a Renthal handlebar and a motorcycle clog integrated between the tubes of the frame.
The original tires of the KX 250 F are Dunlop MX3S tires.
More couple
The Japanese engineers did not only focus on the bicycle part; they also worked hard on the engine! They have renewed, or at least updated, everything to make the engine perform better.
The major change concerns the inclination of the cylinder (change of 7°). With this repositioning, Kawasaki wants to offer more luggage space and more torque. Combined with new crankcases, a new crankshaft rotation, new cylinder and piston treatments and a thoroughly revised distribution, this new offset reduces friction and vibration. This prevents the moving parts from wearing out prematurely.
Furthermore, the KX-F has a double injection so that it can respond better to the ignition curve (Map Switch), with 3 color chips (plugs) that can be changed at the CDI to change the power range.
As an option, there is also a tool called a 'calibration kit' to fine-tune the adjustment of the 3 power curves.
When setting off, the Kawasaki machine always reaps the benefits of Launch Control, an anti-slip device intended to improve road grip just after the start signal. This device is located on the handlebar at the level of the left thumb.
Show time !
Time to take action! The Zacca Station circuit is scratched, wet and slightly sandy. This is exactly the type of track that can be seen on the videos of the US Outdoor Championship. 13 motorcycles, 13 mechanics and just as many journalists who are ready to give their best for a whole day and draw the necessary conclusions...
Everything is there to test the KX 250 F in the best conditions. And as icing on the cake, Jeremy Mac Grath will be present. Of course, we don't have to introduce 'Showtime' anymore... Throughout the day, this man, who has been representing the brand for 3 years now, will accompany us in all his simplicity. We've had worse sparring partners!
The new KX-F 250 feels good in the hand. First adjust the levers and the clutch and then we are ready for the photo shoot and to discover this beautiful playground!
The position is quite tense. One hangs over this motorcycle thanks to a handlebar with a fairly high arch and a saddle that is in line with the tank. This Kawasaki model exudes confidence from the start; the trump card of the green model is probably the frame. As for the engine, during this day we will test the different curves and see if they drastically change the behavior of the engine.
The frame and engine are perfectly matched
First impression: the KXF is certainly not the most powerful motorcycle in its category, but it undoubtedly offers the best coordination between the frame and the engine. During jumps, in hairpin bends or in fast corners, this Kawasaki model shines and is very well balanced. Undoubtedly the fork could have been hardened at the end of the compression, but this is just a matter of personal adjustments.
The only downside, in my opinion, is a lack of explosiveness at higher speeds, where I regularly reached the power limits. This model fell a bit short in this area; On such a demanding track I could easily have used 2 more HP. However, this is not so bad, especially when we look at the results in MX2 achieved by Dylan Ferrandis or the results of the Team Pro-Circuit in the US. For the most efficient, this segment can certainly be further strengthened.
Apart from this comment, the small KX-F is homogeneous, has linear power and parasitic vibrations are negligible. There is also nothing to complain about the gearbox; this is precise and well stepped.
When we compare the different plugs (ignition curves), we see that the engine behaves clearly differently. The black (soft) plug softens the engine considerably and gives it a very comfortable roundness at low speeds. This is ideal on a damp or very selective track; Young pilots who start in this cylinder category will also greatly appreciate this.
The green (standard) plug offers an ideal compromise, with a very linear increase in speed, while the more aggressive white curve will clearly provide more resistance at low and moderate speeds. However, you will have to make a bit of a reduction in length, which will mean that you will have to shift gears earlier.
Remember that the most advanced riders can use the calibration kit to determine the ideal power range for their riding style.
During the take-off tests, the importance of the 'Launch Control' system becomes completely clear, because it literally sticks the front to the ground thanks to controlled traction and a more linear acceleration. Really efficient!
We would like to say something about the changed position of the footrests. You can actually decrease or increase it. Out of curiosity, I was able to discover a real advantage, at least for a pilot of my stature (1 m): my center of gravity is lowered and I can change position more easily (from sitting to standing and vice versa), which is therefore clearly less tiring over time. of a rag. However, this still needs to be tested on circuits with deep ruts, which could be subject to sanding...
Not the most striking, but devilishly efficient!
Time for an evaluation now. We can say that Kawasaki did not miss its target. The Greens wanted a simple, more agile engine with linear power. This KX250F machine is not the most explosive, nor the most impressive. It is not an exclusive or elitist machine. She is incredibly efficient and has one of the most efficient frames as well as an extremely high-performance engine for many of us. By the way, out of curiosity, I would like to take out my chronometer and measure its efficiency compared to certain more notable brands!
When choosing your future toy, you might also be seduced by its refined line, restyled plastic and beautiful aluminum frame... Discover this model at your official Kawasaki dealer!
