Jeffrey Herlings wins the MX2 Grand Prix in Assen
Jeffrey Herlings has won the Dutch MX2 Grand Prix in the north of the Netherlands. The Red Bull KTM rider immediately takes another GP victory in his return. This was Herlings' thirteenth GP victory of the season. But what was especially important for the Dutchman is that he was able to increase his lead in the standings after missing three games ago. With only two games to go, Herlings now has a 76-point lead over second man Jeremy Seewer.
Thomas Covington remains the best…
Due to the weather conditions in the morning, it was necessary to see who would best deal with the condition of the watered circuit. Surprisingly, it was the American Rockstar Energy Husqvarna rider Thomas Covington who was able to hold his own and took victory in the first series. Jeffrey Herlings took second place after being in a duel for a long time with his compatriots Bas Vaessen and a little later Brian Bogers. The Swiss Jeremy Seewer was perhaps the biggest victim of this first series because he did not get further than fifteenth place and thus lost some points to Herlings.
Prado makes it difficult for Herlings…
The Spaniard Jorge Garcia Prado provided the surprise in the second series. The track had dried out a bit more and we immediately had a faster race. Prado was able to keep Herlings behind him for about seven laps and did not make it too easy for Herlings. But the young Spaniard ultimately had to bow down to his grandmaster in the Red Bull KTM team. Once Herlings was in the lead, it was just a matter of controlling the Red Bull KTM rider to drive to victory. Prado took second place and Brian Boogers finished third. Swiss Suzuki World MX2 rider Jeremy Seewer was also unable to make an impact in the second series and would only cross the finish line in thirteenth place.
What about our Belgians…
Yamaha Kemea rider Brent Van Doninck crashed in the opening lap of the first series and did not get further than 22nd place. In the second series Van Doninck was still able to manage a ninth place. Our second compatriot at the start, Nathan Renkens, took five World Cup points in the first series with a 16th place. In the second series Renkens finished 22nd.
