Cairoli returns to the 350SX-F for the GP in Loket
Eight-time world champion Tony Cairoli makes a surprise return on the Red Bull KTM Factory 350SX-F this weekend at the Czech Grand Prix in Loket for the thirteenth round of the 2016 MXGP series.
The 30-year-old Sicilian apparently tested the 2017 version of the bike in Belgium this week and has therefore decided to return to the machine that won him the premier class title from 2010 to 2014. He confirmed on Thursday that he will ride his old reliable bike on the circuit just outside Karlovy Vary.
Cairoli has won just four Grands Prix in total on the 450SX-F since deciding to switch bikes after five races of the 2015 campaign. He immediately took victory on the 450SX-F with his debut in the Spanish GP and repeated the same two weeks later in England. He then got hurt in the qualifying sessions of his home Grand Prix in Maggiora. This season he won in Germany and Italy, but subsequently failed to reach the podium in the next four GPs.
Loket is not the happiest hunting ground for the #222, but his preference for sand will be welcome in the MXGP series with a week later in Lommel for the Belgian Grand Prix. Cairoli is currently second in the standings and is 92 points behind Tim Gajser with six games to go and around 300 points to earn. It is not yet known whether Cairoli, who was reportedly very happy with the updated 350SX-F, will also ride this bike for the rest of the season on a few unknown circuits and the long fast track at Glen Helen. is on the calendar.
