Strijbos and Herlings take the flowers in Mill!
Mill April 24 – Before the start of the second race of the Dutch Masters of Motocross, the question was not whether Jeffrey Herlings would win the MX2 class, but how he would win it. Jeffrey Herlings has won all the competitions in which he started this year. Mill did not change that. On the Kuilen circuit, which turned white after many hailstorms, he won both heats in an inimitable way. The competition already felt very good if they were not put on a lap by Herlings. Six in the first heat and seven in the second heat were not doubled. It was exciting far behind Herlings' back. Davy Pootjes missed the podium due to a fall in the first moto. In the second moto he joined the leading group and finished third. Brian Bogers made his comeback after his broken collarbone in Valkenswaard. He did well, finishing fourth twice, good for second place on the podium. South African Calvin Vlaanderen finished third after two excellent races. As the most combative rider, he was awarded the 'Jan van der Steijn trophy' afterwards. Max Anstie and Aleksandr Tonkov, two absolute GP toppers, did not have an easy time in Mill. Anstie finished a distant second in the first heat but had a bad start in the other race. Tonkov went down. Naturally, with an undefeated status, Herlings leads the championship. The rest follows at a respectful distance.
Glenn Coldenhoff made an appearance in the MX1. In Axel he had to miss the race due to an injury. His main opponents in Mil were the Russian Evgeny Bobryshev and the Belgian Kevin Strijbos, who entered at the last minute. Bobryshev, winner twice in Axel, rode for all he was worth in Mill, but due to falls he still ended up in third place twice, far behind the leaders Strijbos and Coldenhoff. The Dutchman had an excellent start twice, but then lost out to Strijbos each time. In the second heat, Glenn did not simply give in, he bit into Strijbos' wheel, but he was unable to take first place, and thus the victory of the day. “But I am satisfied with my driving and am going to the Grand Prix in Latvia in good spirits,” said Coldenhoff. For Strijbos, who is in a mental trough, his victory in Mill was a nice moral boost. As far as the championship is concerned, Bobryshev is still proudly in the lead. The best Dutchmen in the rankings are Rick Statink and William Saris with an equal number of points in sixth place.
In the 125cc class, Belgian Jago Geerts was by far the best twice. Second was the Dane Bastiaan Boegh Damm and third was the Norwegian Sander Agard-Michielsen. The best Dutchman was Marcel Conijn (3rd and 6th). Jago Geerts leads the championship ahead of Agard-Michielsen and Conijn.
In the 85cc youth group, the foreigners were also too strong for the Dutch. The Swede Emil Jonrup won ahead of the Dane Rasmus Pedersen. Dean Schellen (4th and 2nd) upheld the Dutch honor in the class. Jonrup leads the rankings.
The next Dutch Masters of Motocross (from a series of five) is on Sunday, June 12 in Markelo, Overijssel.
