Antonio Cairoli “highly motivated” for more MXGP success
Eight-time World Champion Tony Cairoli is still very motivated to add some more MXGP successes to his list of achievements. Especially after the loss in the MXGP class last season, which was the first time in this decade. The Red Bull KTM rider is currently struggling with two broken ribs, but remains combative in his preparation to regain the world title, which he has won six times in a row since his arrival in the MXGP in 2009.
“I am very motivated and I feel good when I ride,” says the Sicilian who is in the last year of his contract with KTM. “When I think back to last year and the fact that I was able to stay close to the front despite my injury, I know for myself that I can still do it. If everything stays like this then it will be perfect.”
After all these years of glory in the sport, the 30-year-old (turns 31 in September) knows that people will be watching to see if there will be a setback after the somewhat failed 2015 season and if they will see the same “222 magic” and it is possible again to win series and races. The comings and goings of Ryan Villopoto are still fresh in the minds of fans, the multiple AMA Supercross Champ ultimately also opted for retirement after his injury in 2015.
“I know I'll get this question a lot,” says Cairoli when we asked him if he was ready to give that extra. “I don't mind or care if there isn't as much spotlight on me or attention on me. It's kind of nice to have a little less pressure at the start of a new season.”
