Christophe Pourcel makes French audiences celebrate!
The second day of the Lille Supercross may have been a lot less emotionally charged than the first, but when it came to tension, both days were on par.
The SX2 Class also contributed to this. All eyes were mainly focused on Maxime Desprey, the reigning 'Prince of Lille' and the winner of day one. And this one lived up to its favorite role again. Teammate Darian Sanayei was allowed to start in the lead, but when he made a mistake in the sand bend, Maxime Desprey immediately thought it was enough. He took the lead and never relinquished it, behind him we saw a nice battle between Brian Hsu, Florent Richier, Thomas Do and Alexis Verhaegen, among others. The surprising and fast learning Brian Hsu held off all these experienced supercross specialists and finished a close second ahead of Florent Richier.
In the second SX2 final we saw a holeshot from Adrien Lopes, but the KTM pilot's reign was quickly over when first Florent Richier and after a few laps Maxime Desprey and Thomas Do flew past him. Florent Richier and Maxime Desprey fought a duel for the victory, but the latter also knew that this second place was enough for him to prolong the title of 'Prince of Lille'. Florent Richier won ahead of Maxime Desprey and Thomas Do. Behind this trio finished the two wildcards Darian Sanayei and Brian Hsu. For the general classification we saw Maxime Desprey beat Florent Richier and Thomas Do with 1-2-1-2.
In the SX1 class we were looking forward to Cooper Webb, Christophe Pourcel and yesterday's winner Weston Peick. In Superpole, Christophe Pourcel immediately showed with an extraterrestrial time that he was a man to be reckoned with, Dylan Ferrandis did this with a second time shortly after Christophe Pourcel and before Cooper Webb and Weston Peick also showed that he was certainly not a figure was to be underestimated!
And the French public got their money's worth! Because as soon as the gate fell in the main event, it was none other than Christophe Pourcel who took the lead, initially ahead of Fabien Izoird, Valentin Guillod and Malcolm Stewart. Cooper Webb, who came back from the background, rolled over everyone one by one until he ended up in second place. The American competitor of the French but also one of the crowd's favorites did everything he could to bring Christophe Pourcel back. But the Star Racing Yamaha pilot cut his teeth on the high and flawless rhythm of CriCri! Cooper Webb tried and tried everything but ultimately made a serious mistake himself. It was then up to Malcolm Stewart to close the gap on the controlling CP377, but the Geico Honda did not get closer than two seconds and, like his compatriot, collapsed in his enthusiasm. The fall of the Honda pilot thoroughly shook up the overall result of 'King of Lille'. Because this paved the way for a second place for Weston Peick and the accompanying title 'King of Lille', a victory for every Christophe Pourcel fan who until then seemed on his way to succeeding himself as the last French winner since 2006. No victory everywhere, but a main-event victory and that was already enough to make the French go crazy. The fact that Fabien Izoird finished third on the podium of the main event on Sunday made the party complete!
King of Lille: 1. Weston Peick (1-2), 2. Christophe Pourcel (3-1), 3. Cooper Webb (2-5)
