Aleksandr Tonkov to Standing Construct Yamaha in 2016
It has been in the rumor mill for a while, but Yamaha has now confirmed that Aleksandr Tonkov will compete for the Standing Construct Yamaha Yamalube team in the MX2 class next season. With this, the Russian Tonkov will become the new teammate of our compatriot Julien Lieber in the MX2 class on the YZ250F.
In addition to these two riders in the MX2 class, the Standing Construct Yamaha Yamalube team will also field Valentin Guillod on the YZ450F in the MXGP class. The Swiss, who won three Grand Prix victories in MX2, now has to make the mandatory switch to the MXGP class due to the age limit of 23 years in MX2.
Team manager Tim Mathys: “Aleksandr had a good feeling with Yamaha and we are happy that we approached him about our plans in 2016. I think he is a rider who can develop much further and continue to make progress. We know he has the potential to achieve podiums and victories. It is another strong sign for the team that a rider of his caliber wants to ride for us and thus continue to work on the development of Yamaha.”
