Febvre still feels no pressure…
Yamaha Factory rider Romain Febvre extended his lead a little during the Latvian Grand Prix and immediately scored his seventh podium place in a row in the FIM World Championship. The Frenchman consolidated his lead by just two points over Red Bull KTM rider Tony Cairoli who now faces a gap of 41 points with just six races remaining this season.
As a result, Febvre will continue to ride around with the red plate on his YZ450FM when we get the next race in the championship on the hard track of the Czech Loket on July 25-26. Now the most successful rider this season with victories and series victories, 23-year-old Febvre is still not thinking about perhaps the biggest trophy of all… the world title in his very first season in the MXGP class. “When I race I don't set any expectations or goals,” he admits. “I just want to ride the way I want and get a good start. We still have six games to go and anything can happen. At the moment I am in a good flow.”
The slippery and stony circuit of Loket must become the hunting ground for Febvre, because after that we will have three sand tracks with Lommel, Mantova and Assen that will be crucial in the championship. Especially because the Sicilian Cairoli has had more time to recover from injuries to his left arm. The MXGP class may well enter the grand final. But HRC Honda rider Gautier Paulin is also only 65 points behind Febvre and has already won the GP in Valkenswaard this season and was also strong in Lommel last season and a little later also won the Grand Prix of Mexico in Leon. This South American Grand Prix will be the penultimate race of the season at the beginning of September.
The last “Rookie” to win a title in the MXGP was Antonio Cairoli in 2009, who was still riding the Yamaha at the time.
