Aleksandr Tonkov triumphs in ONK MX2 in Gemert
Aleksandr Tonkov of Wilvo Negaan Husqvarna Factory Racing has won the first race of the Open Dutch MX2 Championship in Gemert. The fanatical Russian dominated the first moto, but in the second moto he had to fight for it until the last lap, but in the end he came out on top so he could send his factory Husqvarna across the finish line first. Dean Ferris crashed hard in the first moto and had to leave the race. In the second moto he rode in second place for a long time, but after a mistake he was eventually flagged in third place.
In training, Aleksandr immediately made his mark by setting a time that was 1.8 seconds faster than the second man. Everything went smoothly in the first heat as well. He took the holeshot and controlled the entire first heat. He kept the second man at a safe distance and won the first heat in a controlled manner. In the second moto his start was slightly less good and this time he had to come back from around fifth place. Aleksandr needed three laps to move up to second place, but by that point the leader had already managed to open a gap. Everything was done, but for a moment it seemed that he could no longer identify the leader. However, by keeping the pace high and going even further in the final phase, he managed to pass the leader in the last lap and crossed the finish line as the winner. Aleksandr also took the day's victory in Gemert.
After Dean Ferris managed to finish sixth in the morning training of the MX1 class, he suffered a major setback in the first moto. He started just outside the top five, but after a number of laps he made a mistake, dropping to fourteenth place. In the following laps he came back to tenth place until he had a hard crash and injured himself. Dean decided to leave the race but fortunately was able to start in the second heat. Despite his heavy crash in the first moto, Dean did well in the second moto. He was in second place in the early stages, but then his engine stopped for a moment, causing him to lose a place and fall back to third place. In the remainder of the moto Dean kept the fourth man at bay and finished the race nicely in third place. Because Dean did not cross the finish line in the first heat, he finished in tenth place in the overall standings.
In two weeks' time, the third race for the World Championship will be scheduled for Wilvo Negaan Husqvarna Factory Racing in Brazil.
