France wins the “Motocross of Nations”!!!
The French team with Gautier Paulin (MXGP), Steven Frossard (Open) and Dylan Ferrandis (MX2) became the deserved winners of the 2014 FIM Monster Energy Motocross of Nations. Gautier Paulin had the largest share in this victory for the French team by winning two of the three series. Add to that a second and fourth place for Steven Frossard. Then third man Dylan Ferrandis only had to finish ninth to take the most prestigious trophy to France. Second place went to our compatriots with Jeremy Van Horebeek, Julien Lieber and Kevin Strijbos. However, they had to keep their fingers crossed for a very strong French team. Perhaps without the problems of Van Horebeek and the fall of Strijbos, there might have been a bit more. Finally, third place went to Team USA, which did not perform as strongly in Latvia as expected.
Race 1 MXGP-MX2 :
This first series was mainly dominated by the Frenchman Gautier Paulin, who took the series victory ahead of the American Ryan Dungey and the German Max Nagl. Our compatriot Jeremy Van Horebeek was able to take over fourth place from the Russian Aleksandr Tonkov as of the last round. Julien Lieber, on the other hand, had a more difficult time on his MX2 machine, but still turned a 21st place into a 15th. Antonio Cairoli, who was on the MX2 for the occasion, rode nicely as the first MX2 pilot in fifth place until he crashed ten minutes from the end and had to give up. The battle was mainly between the French and American teams, where the Frenchman Dylan Ferrandis managed to beat back the American Jeremy Martin in the last two laps. In the standings after this first series, this immediately put France in the lead with 10p, ahead of the USA 13p and Belgium 19p.
Race 2 MX2 Open:
Our compatriot Kevin Strijbos was the man who took care of the second series. Strijbos was right at the start and took the lead from the third lap and never relinquished it. Behind Strijbos, it was the Frenchman Steven Frossard who stayed in the wake of our compatriot throughout the series and thus finished second. Places three and four were again English with Dean Wilson and Tommy Searle. Our second compatriot Julien Lieber had a good start this time and was in eighth place until halfway through the series. But towards the end Lieber had to give up some places to Coldenhoff, Ferrandis and De Reuver. An eleventh place would be his share in this second series. And what about Team USA… Eli Tomac and Jeremy Martin fell just outside the top ten after the start. Tomac managed to finish sixth, but Martin only finished 13th. In the standings after two series, France remains in the lead with 21 points, followed by England (28p), Belgium (31p) and USA (32p).
Race 3 Open-MXGP:
It was France that started the third and decisive series best. With Paulin and Frossard in the top ten, the French immediately put the pressure on England and Belgium. Things immediately went wrong for our compatriots because Kevin Strijbos crashed in the second round and fell to 29th place. Van Horebeek was able to keep the lead for three laps, but then had to let the French force Gautier Paulin go ahead. With Paulin in the lead and Frossard in fourth place, the French were naturally set for victory. So we had to look forward to second and third place on the final podium. Van Horebeek was already a close second for Belgium, so we had to wait and see what Kevin Strijbos could do after his fall. And yes, Strijbos still took a nice ninth place in this final series. That gave Belgium a certain second place. The third podium place was between the England and USA teams. But the England team lost Shaun Simpson in the last series with engine trouble and the USA team ended up on the podium thanks to a better result in the final series.
