Robin Bakens will participate in the MX2 GP of Lommel!
An extra Belgian will be at the start this weekend during the Lommel GP. Robin Bakens was able to pick up a wildcard for his home GP and will compete in the MX2 class this coming weekend.
Only on Tuesday did the Waaslander receive confirmation that the registration was in order and he can play between Tixier and Co in the Lommel sandbox. In preparation, he spent a few days testing in the sand to ensure optimal suspension and test some new parts. These tests went well and Robin goes to Limburg with a good feeling. “There is of course some pressure on my shoulders, which is normal when you participate in a GP. But I'm still going to try to just have fun, when I have fun everything runs just that little bit smoother than when I get stiff at the start.” According to Robin Bakens.
It was not only the test days that went smoothly for the Bakens Yamaha rider. Last week the black cross was on the program. The results, a 21-22-DNF-16th place, do not reflect how good the feeling on the bike was. Robin Bakens: “Even though the typical black cross track, without cuts and deep ruts, is not immediately something for me, I still thought my turn was quite good. Unfortunately, I was often in a tight spot at the start, which meant I was able to end up at the very back in two of the four heats. The speed was good, which gives me a bit of confidence for the GP.”
When we asked Robin what it was like to ride the black cross, we received the following answer: “It is a great big and well-organized event. It is almost impossible to describe what a crazy feeling it gives to see a sea of people around the track, constantly cheering and supporting. What is also special is that you can safely arrive at the finish line drunk, as beer was thrown to such an extent that you cannot imagine. This whole weekend is just one big party. Yet as a rider you are very nicely shielded in the paddock and you are not bothered by the partygoers at all, this was really well done by the organization, a big compliment for that. If it were up to me, I would be here again next year!”
