Cairoli unopposed
Without too much effort, Antonio Cairoli achieved the 71st victory of his career in Hyvinkäa, Finland. Cairoli won both heats and, after a crash by Van Horebeek in the second heat, sees his lead in the World Championship increase by a big leap. Steven Frossard was on the podium for the first time since Valkenswaard 2012 and Kevin Strijbos finished third on the podium after a great race in the second round.
There was little to do in the first series. Cairoli took the best start ahead of Van Horebeek and Ferris. Our compatriot was initially able to keep the distance with the Italian within limits, but in the end Cairoli was once again out of bounds. Van Horebeek came second and Frossard third. Strijbos crossed the finish line fifth and Ken de Dycker finished 15th.
In the second moto Cairoli was again the fastest. Van Horebeek followed again in second, but immediately had to leave a gap with the reigning world champion. After a few laps, Van Horebeek had a heavy fall and hit his head. He fell far back and made a pit stop to put some things right. He persevered and eventually finished tenth, scoring important World Cup points. At the front, Frossard, Simpson and Ferris were involved in an exciting duel. Just before the end, Kevin Strijbos was added, who had made a fantastic recovery after a bad start. In the very last lap Kevin passed Ferris, securing third place in the final standings. Frossard came second and Simpson third.
In the World Cup standings, Cairoli is now 62 points ahead of Van Horebeek, who in turn is 45 points ahead of Clement Desalle.
