DIGA Racing Race Report: EMX125 Teutschenthal, Germany
Where the most recent Motocross of Nations was held last year and most of the young 125cc pilots stood as spectators on the sidelines to watch their heroes compete for the most prestigious trophy in motocross. Was their playground last weekend to battle it out and score points for their EMX 125cc championship in the fifth round of their campaign.
Qualification series: 61 pilots registered for the qualifications in Teutschenthal. Thomas managed to set the third fastest time in Group A, even though he had a big crash and the driving afterwards was not really comfortable for him. Nolan was allowed to start in the second group, but was unable to achieve a fast lap good enough for direct placement. As usual, he rode a strong repechage and confirmed his name on the starting list for the championship series.
Series 1:It is widely known that the starting position in Teutschantal largely determines the outcome. The first left turn immediately draws the 40 participants onto one long ribbon. Thomas had a much more favorable position at the gates than Nolan and on their first passage they registered in places 7 and 35 respectively. Thomas managed to climb to 5th position and Nolan passed 8 other pilots to finish 27th.
Series 2: Once again, Nolan had to experience the disadvantage of a position on the outside of the starting gates and had to fight his way to the front to get close to the top 20 and the associated points. He managed to gain almost ten places by climbing from 35th to 26th place, again close to the points. Thomas managed to start among the top 10 and immediately made up a lot of valuable ground around the leaders. A few laps into the match he was off for a great fight with the Swede Alvin Ostlund. Both riders fought for every centimeter, but it was Thomas who pulled out the stops in the last 50 meters to take third place with a tire thickness lead.
Thomas Sileika: “The weekend started off tough, I dropped off considerably in the qualifying sessions. I hurt my ribs and had trouble breathing, my shoulder also took a big blow, I was actually covered in bruises everywhere. Fortunately, I was able to achieve one good lap and that was enough for third place and qualifying.
In the first heat I started around 7th place and was able to overtake some guys until I was 4th. In the last lap I made another mistake, which meant I only crossed the finish line in 5th place, a bit disappointed.
The start of the second series was not a great story either because I got stuck between two other guys, I was able to dive inside and was immediately somewhere around the 7th or 8th position. The riding went a lot better and I was able to make up a number of places to finish in third position, enough for third place on the podium. I know where there is still room for improvement, so I will now start working on strengthening those weak points.”
Nolan Cordens: “In the time training I had a 19th time, just under a second, so I had to go back to the retakes. In the last chance I had a bad start, I rode to 13th place on the first lap, which was already good, but then I fell and had to come back from 19th. I ended up finishing in 9th place, which was great.
The first series I had to start completely on the outside, which was certainly not ideal, so my start was not too good. I was able to get to a 27th place, which wasn't bad. In the second series I had another bad start, which is not abnormal from that position on the outside, I was then able to drive to 26th place.
Overall, I am satisfied with the weekend, I was able to ride again and gain experience. Now I am going to train very hard for the next competition in Loket, so that I can avoid that 'LCQ' and have a better starting position, then points are perfectly possible. I would also like to thank all the people who support me and especially my mechanic Johan!”
Team manager, Dirk Saelen: “We can be proud of the boys. Nolan once again rode a strong 'Retake' and managed to qualify again, which was the objective for this season. The results in 2014 have already shown that it is not that easy to score points in this category, but he will get there if he continues to fight like he did this weekend.
Thomas made a big difference in the qualifications due to a slippery spot in the take-off of a jump and was put through the mill. This could have ended very differently. With all those bruises, his riding in the first series was not as we know him to be, but in the second he rode strong enough to assure himself and the team a podium place again. He won some points in the championship and with two games to go, anything is still possible.”
The next round of the European Championships EMX125 will take place in the Czech Republic on the weekend of July 27.
